i stairs a moment before, evidently
upon receiving my message, transmitted through Katie, that I would not he Jown to dinner. I unlocked the door und opened It. hoping levoutly that I would bo able to keep up tho attitude I had chosen against Dicky's rudeness, that of quiet cold dignity. ' "See here" Dicky began roughly "I want to know whether you're really sick or whether you're simply stalling because you're mid. Katie says you're not coming down to dinner." "Katie Is eminently correct in her statement. I am not com'nf? down to dinner," I answered frigidly. "Are you sick or grouchy?" The question was explosive. I knew my husband well enough to realize that my next words would probably precipitate a .storm, and I resolved to end the scene quickly. "After your rudeness of this morning, I do not see that my reasons for keeping to my room have any Interest for you. But as I
really have a headache, I must
you to excuse me." I stepped back into my room ard closed my door. He had done ex
actly the same thing a few hours before, when I had asked him for an explanation of the impassioned love letter, written in a woman's handwriting and copied in his own. which had dropped from the basket of waste paper he had so carefully destroyed. Tho only difference in the two incidents was that he had slammed the door in my face, and accompanied with an oath his indignant refusal to explain the letter, while I had shut the door quietly, and had preserved the outward forms of courtesy in my words. I heard him draw in his breath sharply, and then like an angry street pamln. he called out loudly, "Oh. go to the devil," and, turning rushed down the stairs again. Fvery nerve was quivering as 1 returned to my low chair by the window. I knew that Dicky would not readily forgive my action, even
mougn he knew It had been caused
by his own outrageous rudeness. Rut I felt that more than the result of this one Incident depended upon my holding fast to thp course of action I had planned. If I allowed Dicky to persist in his habit of rudely snarling at me whenever he was angry, I should soon have no self respect left. I had thought the matter over very carefully, and resolved that until Dicky apologized to me

"You don't need to bother to open the door," lie called. "I'm poing- to stay in town a day or two. until you get over your grouch. Any time you come out of it telephone me and I'll come home " He hurried away, without glvinS me time to answer, even if I had wished to do so. Hut there was no desire for speech with my h'irtand
in the cold rage which beuan to creep over me. The airy disdain with which he had treated my an?er, the diabolically clever manner with which he had managed to put the burden of any reconciliation on me infuriated me. Not that there was left in me any desire for a reconciliation. At the moment I was almost angry enough to wish that I might never see him again. Hut I did not quite get to the point of uttering that wish, even mentally. There is a thread of su-

I conceived and dismissed tgain half a dozen fantastic schemes to bring Dicky to a realization of his error, for my anger was just childish enough to wish in some way to "get even." Katie greeted me joyfully when I came downstairs- She had kept a delicious breakfast warm for me. and was voluble over the serving of it. "I was joost tooming oop stairs mit dot tray, von I hear you." she said as she hovered around me. "I tink vunce I coom oop stairs, wake you, den I tink, no, I let you sleep all you vant. yen you sleep, you happy." "Thank you. Katie," I returned, and dismissed her upon some housev. ifcly pretext. Her perceptions were too keen, her sympathies too warm for me to be quite comfortable with her eyes watching me. It was an hour after breakfast, when I was still chafing under Dicky's rudeness, that the telephone summoned me. I hurried to it. in the hope that Dicky was 'phoning his repentance to me, something he had done frequently before. But it was not Dicky's voice that came to me over the wire. The deeper tones were those of Dr. Pet-tit.
I believe he's really needed here, though I'm afraid the woman who darns those stockings might not quite agree with me.
