L George A, Davis Makes Address in Opening of Fifth Big Campaign. "The 70,000 white crosses scattered over the fields of France and the thousands of wounded men In the hospitals in this country and in Furope should be our Incentive to subscribe and buy Victory loan bonda. If the spirits of tho dead be permitted to mingle with those of the living they would cry out to us 'prove that we have not died in vain, " declared George A. Davis, of the Seventh federal reserve dis-ti-ict of Chicago, in his address at the first meeting of the t.' Joseph county Victory loan committee held Friday night at the auditorium In the Elks temple. . Besides Mr. Dais' speech, talks were given by W. L. Chandler, chairman of the Vict or 3 loan committee of this county; his assistant, Fred Woodward; F. A. Bryan, chairman of the fourth Liberty loan; WiU H. Wade, of Indianapolis, chairman of the fourth Liberty loan for the plate of Indiana; J. A. Fish, a wounded soldier from the federal reserve district in Chicago, and J. L Xeff, of this city. Tho First Regiment band of the Dode Manufacturing company furnished music for the evening. "There were three phases in the war," continued 31 r. Davis. "First came the preparation and mobilization, fecoiin the hostilities, and third the effects of the war. We have successfully passed through the first two stages and now it is up to us to prove that we are worthy of victory. Proving our worthiness is going to be the great task, as wo are free from war and free from the ypirlls of war." "We have another victory to win and that victory is over ourselves In the spirit of relaxation. It is natural for us to feel that now that the hostilities have ceased that we should relax from the efforts already put forth in making our other undertakings a success. As Napoleon onco said, 'Nothing is done as long as there remains something- more to le done.' Much Depends on Success. "The restoration of peace, tho financing of victory and the revival of industry depend on the success of this ictory loan. Ther ja not one of us that will not suffer in some material way if this loan is not pu. over. "We know the American spirit, we know the fighting ability of our boys, but what we do not know is the power of thrift. Thrift in this cocntry is ar. unknown juantity. To be thrifty we need not be mL-eru, but we must be able to manage our earnings. Thrilt does not jm-an we should not buy anything that we do not need, but it means that we mutt discriminate what our needs really are." In conclusion Mr. Davis pointed out what great advances thrift has made since. the beginning of the Liberty loan campaigns. Wounded Soldier Speaks. George Fish, the soldier that made the address, was with tho first troopship that arrived on French soil with Pershing. He had been in the battles of the fromme, Canti-my, Ch attau-Thierry ard several other engagements until lie was bnally gassed and wounded. Ha was returned to this country last fall and helped in the work oJ the fourth Liberty loan drive. Mr. Fish related a few of the hardships endured by the soldiers at the front that it might renew tho spirit of the m?n in charge of the work to help them in their big job. "The boys today are having it tougher than .when they are really lighting, for now they are on the pick and shovel job continuously in the work of reconstruction. Put the tqys are going to stick until their task is complete", so the least the people in this country can do is to work until the Victory loan is fully subscribed. Remember, tha war is not over till every American t-oldier is returned to his hoir.e and Job." Mr. Wade in his talk warned the men in charge of the work not to call the Victory loan bonds "notes." Although they really are notes, they .uean the veiy same thing as bonds. The reason why they are terrm-d notes in this- issue is because the law provides that four arid a quarter percent interest is all that is allowed for bonds that do not mature before five years. These bonds are to mature at the end of five years and the Interest on them will i-e greater than the percent provided by law, 'lerco the reason for calling them notes. Mr. Woodward in hi speech congratulated the audience on th.a spirit of enthusiasm shown and f-ai-l h felt assuied that the svuprn'.e job would be succssfuly carrkd out m this county. Mr. Xeff assured th meeting rf tho hckin" of the banking houses 01" the city. AMi:iUCS OX MVKMAV COAST APCHANCI'U March 2a.
