Many of the small towns that have in former years gone by without notice, are this year making considerable trouble for the better teams. For instance. J,a Crosse sprung a big surprise when they trounced Importe by one lone point, Holling l'rairio nearly made Laporte take the bench, and Milford. xifter a lonpr fiKht with Klkhart. was defeated by a couple of points' As an opener of yesterday afternoon's games, South Fend took Mishnwaka over for the third time this

The Ia Crosse-Goshen tilt started off like thinKs were going to be played in a stiff manner, personal fouls bring called regularly, until a man was put out; then things quieted down for a while. But the fight was still there and the tightest game of the tournament was staged. In the first few minutes the score was In one's favor and then the others, but finally the Ia Crosse crew took a big lead and stayed there the rest of the game, despite the fact that Williams, the Goshen forward, placed basket after basket, but finally fell short pf one lone point. While Williams was the big boy for the Goshen crew, the La Cross" captain. Chapman, also displayed some clever floor work accompanied by the eagle eye of his forward. Shortz. The final score of

BY C1IARLI1S A. CRDILS. Wisconsin Saturday! Primed and in fair condition for the meet with the Badgers today, Capt. Rademacher and 13 other Notre Dame track men left for Chicago last night. They will get into Madison this afternoon and thus get a rest, something they lacked before the meet with Michigan last Saturday. Coach Rockne, slightly under the weather with a touch of the flu, did not make the trip. Rademacher will apportion the rations and direct the team on its trip. Included in the team which left last night were; McGinnis. Mulligan, Colgan, Scallin, Barry, Median, Meredith, Sweeney, Shanahan, Hoar, Gilhllan, Douglas, Rademacher and Powers. Once more expectant eyes are cast toward Gilfillan. The biff boy, judging from past performances ought to be the star of the meet. Not a great deal is known of the strength of the Badgers', but the. report is that the gym at Madison is practically the same as that at Notre Dame. Be that true then. Gilfillan will ask no more. In defeat or in victory he will have no alibi. He is entered in four events for the Saturday meet Last Saturday on a board floor where he was afraid to let himself out he divided the honors with Johnson of Michigan. McGinnis and Mulligan will run in the short distance eventa for Notre Dame. Colgan, Scallin. Barry and Meredith will go the middle distances, and Eddie Meehan, Hie Sweeney and Shanahan will compete in the longer events. As side-kick in the hurdles and jumps Gilfillan will have Hoar, who has consistently shown improvement of late. "Red" Douglas will do most of the high Jumping; Capt. Rademacher and Johnny Powers the pole vaulting. Baseball occupied the stage in the gym yesterday afternoon. For almost two hours Coach Dorais' candidates breezed around the gym, bitting 'em and scooping 'cm up in regular fashion. Out in the back of the gym "Theda" Bara's Brownson hall seconds opened the outdoor season. Coach Bara was long on voice and short on baseball. However, he had two score Cobbs and Jacksons swatting baseballs and chasing flies. Once upon a time "Abie" Lockard was the innovation man at Notre Dame. "Clarice" Scofiel 1. a promising hasehall candidate, has succeeded Al ie. Sconeld's latest is a "baseball haircut." It can not be described; it has to be seen to be appreciated. The idea, at any rate, is to pt away from the wearing of caps., "Tex" Allison has decided to adopt the cut, and it bids fare at this early date to become almost as popular as Dudley Patrick Pearson Duff-Gordon spancles. Chief Meyer thinks so well of Scofleld's cut, he promises to introduce it in the b?t leagnes next time he grabs off a meal with the biff fellows. Four hours of solid practice are on the bill for the baseball candidates this afternoon. Dorais has posted the notice and insists there will be no alibis, no excuses the portion holds for alL
