Gasless Sundays! Saved War for j The Allies
WASHINGTON. Feb. C Sixty days before the armistice was signed and when the situation on the western front had reached a critical Mage, Marshal Foch cabled the fuel administration: "If you don't keep up your petroleum situation, we shall lose the war." This and other messages from allied leaders were made public tonlpht by the fuel administration to shew 'how deliveries of American gasoline in quantities on the western front alone prevente! alterations in the plan of campaign which forced the central powers to an armistice." Another meai;e received Oct. 1,1 Kuid in part: "Sen. HercnKer write 'Highest command informs him that the position has become so serious that change in military operations j will have to he. contemplated, unless! Increased deliveries of Kascline at the front .'ire made possible. " Observance by the American people of the "g:asolinelss Sunday" request, fuel administration officials paid today, enabled Hen. Hereniier later to declare "petroleum will have played as sreat a part in the victory as blood itself and will have proved the life blood of victory." The fuel administration said that tho earl of Curzon on Nov. 21 estimated that the I'nited States furnished SO per cent, of the allied petroleum requirements and other aled leaders sent messages of thanks. FARLOR. BEDROOM AND BATH" PROVES FULL OF HEARTY LAUGHS Walter K. Perkins and Flavia, ArC'.ro, as "Heginald Irving," and "Polly Hathaway." respectively, in "Parlor, Pedroom and Bath," pleased capacity audiences at the Oliver yesterday afternoon and evening with their funny antics. Antics U the word to use though the play was cnything but "slap-stick" in its nature. The story concerns one of those wayside inns which has found so much favor in the eyes of writers of comedy plays, and the compromise, mistaken identity, and well-meaninf:-lut-unsophisticated gentleman ideas are utilized in this play as in others. The comedy situations are fresh, however, and the lines are full of fun. Audiences rocked in laughter as Reginald consulte! his little book, like dozens of others have done in similar plays, because tho; action was "put over" in the right way. Briefly, the story is this: Angelica Irving: (played by Zita Moulton) is in love with her husband and because of his past. His past has been potless, one surmises at once when he walks into the scene, but his wife has hrnn told otherwise, and she thinks the has captured a ' man of the world." In order to sustain his reputation. Reginald, at the Suggestion and with the connivance of Geoffrey I lay ward (CJordon Kldid) he proceeds to compromise himself with a woman. That is the plan, but three women happen in to complicate matters. It's all explained In the last act, of course. The acting was well done, though the make-up of the faminlne char acters, with the exception or I'ouy and Nita Leslie (Margaret Carroll)! was a trifle overdone. This little matter Jarred somewhat, but was overlooked when the action got underway. MERCHANTS SET ASIDE WEEK FOR PUBLIC TO PAY CREDIT ACCOUNTS "Pay-up-week" smarts Monday. Merchants throughout the city are co-operating in this plan, which has proven to be a success in other cities, in an effort to clear their hooks of credit accounts. "Pay up jour bills, so th'j merchant can pay his" is the slopan which has I een adopted by the retail merchants bureau. Signs bearing the slogan have been placed in the store I windows and letters sent to thoso Indebted to tho merchants explaining how they can liquidate their debts through the Morris plan. According to statements made by the merchants, the credit business done during the war period was greater than any other time, and are usinj; this method to effect .1 settlement, so the retailers may settle with the manufacturers and wholesalers. At pr?cnt a second letter to be sent out by the merchants U under TTparution. and another "will be sent the .irst of the week. P.? cause of the large creilit busines done during; the war peiiod the pay-up plan has hrj:i adopte.i throughout the country..
