Ity ('harlot A. J rimes. List! Notre U'imc his a myter' not one of thos dark, blood and thunder affairs with ;i brn, a heroine and a, villain but a mystery It If, neverth h ! A truck whizzed onto th rampuf yesterday afternoon and the driver unceremoniously dropped a trunk in front cf Sorin, and t-uid no more. Such actions at this time of the year are not uneommoii! Som" one chanced to glanc. at tlif name on the trunk. It was that of Andy McDonouKh. star of tht IT 17 indoor track se.i.vn and member -t sotre Dame's champion two-mile relay team. Hut with the trunk there eame no Andy. Whfn last lard from he was at an aviation fbdd in Texas His last letter, written several weeks tKO, stated he was planning to return to Notre Dame. Sine then his brother "Peto," a sphonir. at Notre Dame, has hid no further tidin g a. The puzzl ih qu.-stion n.r romps: ,Vher is Andy?" That he will eventually show up. sporting a pilot's wings, and prepared to buckle down for his last semester nt Notre Dame, is quite certain. At least euch is the hope of Coach Itookne and the flold and Blue following. Although not eligible for the indoor track season, MeHonough ran be used to advantage in the outdoor meets. i:nlMil in 1'. S. Army. McDonouKh left Notre Dame shortly after the outbreak of the war and enlisted in the heavy artillery. He attempted to get into the aviation secilon of the signal corps at Fort Thomas but was unsuccessful. From the Kentucky recruiting camp he was went to Fort Dupont. lie was stationed there several months, at length securing a transfer to the nir service. He went to Texas, completed his training and was piloting a plane at Kelly Field. San Antonio, the day the Germans quit. Deciding that, breezing through the cloud. was exciting enough In war times but a rather tame occupation these peaceful days, Andy applied for discharge that he miht return to Notre Dame to complete his course. The arrival of his trunk Monday afternoon was the first intimation given to any one at the university that his application was granted. Inspct IxKk (lootl. With a return of MeDonough a practical certainty and the arrival of McGlnnis, a broad jumper and a monogram man of '17, an accomplished fact. Coach Hockne's track prospects looked rosy yesterday. Eddie Meehan. who teamed with McDonoURh in '17, will probably pet hack In the harness In a few days. Meehan was one of the best middledistance men ever to wear a Gold and Blue uniform. He has two more years of eligibility. A rumor to the effect that Gilifillan. Notre Dame's all-round athlete, would return to the university in time to start the second Fernerer Kained considerable credence yesterday. Should the bis boy return Notre Dame track stock will go soaring. Mulligan, the little New York speed merchant, is exrected to return next Monday. Coach Dorals drilled his basketballers In passing and shooting in yesterday's workout. The practice lasted two hours. Gipp and Brandy did not pet Into gym tow but both will be on hand, ready to commence a tough preparation for the game next Saturday afternoon with the Michigan Aggies.

LONDON, Jan. 27. The problem of how younp students are to 'pick up the lost years of war,' after having served with the 'colors, so that they shall not suffer for having obeyed the call of duty. Is belnff solved by universities, colleges, professional institutions and the appointments branch of tho ministry of labor in different ways. The University of London is allowing such students to pass a simple examination of a personal character instead of matriculation, while the interval betwen the Intermediate examinations and the prescribed courses of study will be shortened. "War degrees" will also be granted to students who joined the forces just beforo their final examinations in a faculty other than medicine. These degrees will be placed on a special list with the word (War) after the short title M. A., B. A., or others. Irisoners Pass nominations. Twelve British prisoners ivhile in Ruhleben camp In Germany, passed the London university's matriculation examination and others took Intermediate examinations for degrees in science, engineering and economics. The law institute is earing for its young legal students by having passed the "solicitors articled clerks act" whereby students who have been articled may count the period of war service as part time under articles. The Institute of Chartered Accountants has already planned similar reduction of time for serving while the Loyal Institute of Pritish Architects has decided to allow "war" students to forego their final examination provided they pass the intermediate one. Orders have been introduced into the by-laws of the Institution of Civil Lngineers which will allow students' .war service to count as having fulfilled a similar time In study, apprenticeship or other practical engineering service. The appointments branch of the ministry of labor has obtained grants from p 'blic funds toward the training expenses of demobilized officers and men who desire financial aid to prepare for a particular vocation.

WASHINGTON. Jan. 27. The American destroyer Jacob Jones, sunk off the Irish coast by a German submarine on Dec. 6, 1917, was torpedoed by the U-33, the vessel which visited Newport, IL I., in the summer of 191 f.. and later harried allied merchant shipping off the New England coast. This fact was disclosed In the report of Lieuts. V. L. Müller and J. H. Fulcher, U. S. He there saw Lieut. Commander David Worth Bagley, a nephew of the wife of Sec'y Daniels, who commanded the Jacob Jones. Von Schräder told the captured American officers that he had recognized Bagley In the dory of the sinking destroyed and sent out a wireless call for aid before leaving the scene. They spoke zdso of their unique experience in being the only passengers, so far as known, to have traveled from Germany to Harwich, England, with the flotilla of enemy submarines surrendered two weeks after the signing of the armistice. BOLSHEVIKI ARE NOW ON THE OFFENSIVE
ARCHANGEL. Sunday. Jan. 26. The bolsheviki are now on the offensive with infantry and artillery, or both, against four of the seven thin columns of the allies and Russians which have penetrated south
ward through the frozen forest swamps of the province of Archangel. Last right the enemy entered Shenkurs-c while the tirel column of Americans, Russians and British, which had evacuated Shenkursk. marched in a detour over the deep snow, evading a force of several hurrdred of the enemy who waited on the main high road to trap the column in its retreat. In good spirits despite long marches in the cold, and 10 days of hard Mgh'.ing, the Americans and the other troops of the allied force were today at Shegovari. approximately 30 miles north of Shenkurk, on the Vaga river. The enemy apparently is -endin;; patrols to follow the retreating troops, but up to this morning no new attacks had been made on this st ctor.
