POLICE BAFFLED
BY COOK MURDER
Well Known Laporte Man is Shot to Death in Fight With Three Men. News╾Times Special Service] ¶ LAPORTE, Ind., Dec. 26.— LaPorte police are baffled by the murder of Carl Cook, local grocery man, Christmas eve. Two men entered his store on the outskirts of the city apparently wth the intention of relieving him of the money taken in from the holiday sales. According to the police theory, Cook fought with one of the men while another stood at a distance and fired two shots into the man's back. Plucky to the last, Cook drove the robbers from the store after shouting for help fell unconscious. He recovered consciousness only for a minute to tell the physicians at his bedside that he had never seen the men before. Just as the church bells were pealing the midnight tidings of Christmas, Cook died. Five or six suspects have been taken by the police but will be released. It is evident that they are not implicated in the murder. Several people claim to have seen the men, stating that one was a Negro. A reward of $500 is offered for the arrest of the murderers. Cook was a very popular business man. He leaves a widow with two small children. This is the second mysterious murder here within three months. ATTEMPT UNION OF ALL LIBERALS German Democratic Party is Favoring Sane Government in Hun Provinces. ¶ COBLENZ, Monday, Dec. 23.— Appeals for the union of all the liberal parties which desire a republic and do not wish the new Germany to fall into the hands either of reactionaries or socialists, were made at a meeting Sunday of the German democratric party, which assembled in Coblenz to adopt a platform. The party desires a united Germany, including German-Austria: equality before the law of citizens of all classes, male and female; freedom of thought and religion, a free press and free speech, but no arbitrary attacks on the rights of the church. Families with many children, it is declared, should be protected from excessive taxation, ¶ The abolition of war industries is desired. ¶ The party advocates the living of free peasants on free soil. Officials must be insured [assured] a livelihood, in order to insure good service. There must be sympathetic care for the war wounded and for the dependents of the fallen soldiers, which would be made a point of honor in the new Germany. ¶ Upon this platform, it is announced, the German democratic party will stand in the national assembly. . ⸺⸻ NOVEL PENALTY FOR FORAGING AMONG YANKS HEADQUARTERS OF THE AMERICAN TROOPS IN FRANCE. — Bitter words have passed betweer two battalions of American soldiers here over a stolen goose. The bird was missed from a little farm in the area occupied by one battalion, but the feathers were found within the district occupied by the other. ¶ Believing that its territory had been invaded, the first battalion informed the second that when it felt the growing need for goose it would be well to contine its foraging to its own territory and avoid casting unpleasant implications upon its neighbors. The second disowned the feathers, but paid for the goose as a matter of pride. To protect the propertv of the natives in the area occupied by the American regiments the colonel has prescribed a new penalty. "Any man in my command who lays a hand on a fowl that has not been bought and paid for will have to eat the feathers." he declares. . ⸺⸻ WHEN BAN IS LIFTED, THIEVES STEAL FOOD ¶ GARY, Ind., Dec 26.— Two thousand six hundred pounds of sugar, several tubs of lard and other food commodities packed in heavy containers were included in the list of articles taken from the freight house of the Gary Transfer and Storage company. The thefts were committed since the food regulations were declared off. Since then the police have been trying to find the thieves. They have seven people under arrest. . ⸺⸻ VISITS HOME: MET WITH FINE FOR OLD FIGHT ¶ NASHVILLE, Ind., Dec. 26.— In November, 1900, William Mullis fought Calvin Fleetwood when they were returning from a dance. Williams eluded the officers and nothing was heard of him until recently when he returned to visit his old home. He was taken before a court, pleaded guilty to the assault and fined $2.50 for the part he took in the fight 18 years ago.
