Just at thifl time when the ."'irit ot "I'eace on earth, j-ood will toward mn" is upIiCed to le. moro prevalent than at any other time, outh Bend citizens are urged to direct a little of this spirit toward the employes of the outh Bend poütoff ice. In addition to the usual holiday congestion, which seems to be heavier this year than ev-r before in th" history of the local potoffice, thmail handlers are further handicapped by the absence from duty of about 1:0 percent of the regular postoffico forco. The employes who
are absent from work are compel k-J
to be away on account of sickness, thus throwing the added burden on those who are on duty. The employes thvmselvrs u -e jtiMt as anxious as anyone else to sort and deliver Christmas letters
and packacts, but they are asking
for a little patience upon the part of the public just at this time. Tht y say that they realise the importance of Christinas mail, and they are overworking themselves in an (fiurt to ret this mail to its destination, but under the iivuntam ethere may be some little delay and, if there is, they ask that the publie be as patient as possible.
Smallpox indirectly saed Frank Schicker from being given a hearing in city court Saturday morning on the charge of owning the Ü0 gallons of whisky found by the police in the county pest house last Monday afternoon. Not that Schicker has the smallpox-, for he hasn't. However, two of the state's witnesses. Mr. and Mrs. IMward Champaign, who have charge of the pest house, have been enframed recently In taking care of a smallpox patient, and there was not time enoimh siven them to fumigate their clothes befoie appearing in the court Saturday morning. Pr. Kmil O. T'reyermuth. secretary of the health board, gave the court expert advice in regard to allowing the two witnesses to come into court without pioperly fumigating their garments. The secretary said that it nii'ht expose the entire court and its regular Saturday morning audience to the disease if the two witnesses were brought in. The court decided to tribe no chances, so the case was continued to rec. L'S, and instruction"; were given to the state to have Mr. and Mrs. Champaign properly fumigate.
