1 CHARLES DE VREESE IS

RECOVERING FOLLOWING SHELL WOUND IN FOOT The first information that Mrs. M. DeVreese of 411 W. South st.f received of the wounding of her son. Charles, who is a member of the French mortar battery of the American first army division, was Vi ?i totter frnm him that h-

i ill U U)H v- - wrote Oct. 27. He was wounded in one foot in battle on Oct. 1. In i later letter written Nov. 4, he say he was still in the hospital and unable to walk except with the aid of crutches. Tie appeared very cheerful and was of the opinion that his wound would not permanently disable him. Evidence of the high respect German troops opposing the first American division had of the fighting ability of the latter, is taken from x copy of the Paris edition of a New Vr.r'- nevsnaner and sent to his

mother of Pvt. DeVreese in one of his letters: "From a captured oificer of th German army comes a remarkable tribute to the fighting prowess of the iirst division of the American troops, whose work will go down in history as among the most remarkable of the war. "He declared that the Germans did not believe the Americans could produce within live years a division such as they had found the lirst division to be. The German, when taken, had seen four years of severe lighting. This is what he had to say yesterday: " 'I received the orders to hold the ground at all costs. The American barrage advanced toward my position and the work of your artillery was marvelous. The barrage was so dense that it was impossible for us to move out of our dugouts. " "Following the barratre closely were troops of the first division. T saw them forge ahead and knew that r.ll was lost. All night I remained in my dugout, hoping vainly that something would happen that would permit mo to rejein my army. This morning your troops found mc and lure I am, after four years .if lighting, a prisoner. " 'Yesterday I knew that th fr?t

üivision was opposite u. and I knew i

! we would have to put up the hardest ' ficht of the war. The first division :r ; is wonderful and th German armv E ! knows it. I 'We did not believe that within . . ? ..15 J .
