His observer was wounded at the beginning of the combat. but ho maneuvered his piano so skilfully that the observer was aide to shoot down on one of their adversaries. First Lieut. Hdward Orr, deceased, pilot, V. S. A. S. 12th aero squadron, for extraordinary heroism, in the Toul sector. France, Aug. 2, 191S. Lieut. Orr. flying with Lieut. Phil A. Henderson, infantry observer, on an unprotected reconnaissance mission, encountered a patrol of eight enemy pursuit planes near the American balloon lino. The patrol was sighted just as one of them dived on the balloon with the intention of destroying It. Without hesitating, Ueut. Orr attacked this plane and followed it to within 5 0 meters, firing his singlefront gun against the double guns with which the fJerman plarA was equipped. In the meantime, Lieut Henderson engaged the other eight planes, which attacked from the rear. After a violent combat all of the enemy planes were driven off. On Sept. 14 Lieut. P. Irwin, pilot, by a long period of faithful and heroic operations, set an inspiring example of courage and devotion to duty to his entire squadron. Throughout the Chateau Thierry actions, in June and July, 1918, he flew under the worst weather conditions and successfully carried out his missions in the face of heavy odds. In the St. Mihiel sector, Sept. 12 and 13, 1918, he repeated his previous courageous work. He Hew as low as SO feet from the ground behind the enemv
harassing German troops machine guns and rifles. He drove off enemy planes which attempting to destroy an
American observation balloon. On Sept. 12 and 13, he flew at extremely low altitude and carried out infantry contact patrols successfully. Again on Sept. 12 he attacked a German battery and forced the Germans to abandon it, shot off his horse a German officer who was trying to escape, drovo the cannoneers to their dugouts and kept them there until the infantry could come up and capture them.
