The appearance of American troops in yesterday'.1? liifhtins west of the forest of Arponne suj;e.sted to some observers here the possibility that a new French concentration is in progress and a new blow is to be expected at any moment. The natural place for the stroke, it was said, appears to be the Kheinis front, whero the German lines have already been weakened by the surrender of the St. Thierry plateau. The elimination of the poeketoccupied by the Germans just east of II heim, it was arfrued. is already threatened by the Franco-American advances yesterday on the heights northwest of Montbois and the simultaneous forward movement of the Fren-'h northwest of Kheims. On the latter sector the enemy is withdrawing closely pursued, and the advancing French line is now well out into the open ground north of Rheims. Comparatively little advance on the two wiriKs of this pocket, it is thought, should force a hasty evacuation. YnnKs Near Voiiziers. Th Franco-American thru.'t is rearing Vouziers. a rail junction of importance to the enemy. On the other side of the Rheims sector the French already are on the Aisne in the vicinity of Rerry-au-Rae and the pinching out of the pocket probably would permit extension- of the line along the general course of the Ai'-ne-.uippes rivers to a juncture with tho Franco-Americans in the high ground between these two rivers. Tt is pointed out that there are no positions or heavily wooded ground to impede the occupation of the Aisne line for a considerable distance. The establishment of the French on this front would outflank the enemy positions in Lion from tlusoutheast, precisely as the Rritish smash toward the Oiso .valley from north of St. Quentin Hanks both St. Gobain forest and Kaon from the northwest. The result of a successful squeeze operation against the Rheims pocket therefore, is full of promising possibilities to some otficers, for the enemy would no sooner extricate his forces from this menace than he would find himself in an exactly similar trap on a wider front to the north. Mows Cora ins I cry where. Whatever Marshal Foch may be planning, there is every reason to expect immediate blows on various sectors, in the opinion of observers here. Tt is now obvious that the advance of Maj. Gen. Liggett's army along the Meuse has been halted under orders from supreme healquarters and not for lack of power to go ahead, for in that case American troops would not have been available for employment with the French west of the Argonne. Apparently the far reaching plans of thf supreme commander were satisfied by the progress made by the Americans in the first three days of their rush. The Americans now are engaged in local operations on this front until the development of the battle along the whole front again calls for a thrust in this vital sector of tne enemy's position. The stubborn resistance of the Germans before the Rritish north of St. Quentin was taken as clear evidence of the danger to the whole German scheme of retirement carried by this thrust. In the same way. repeated counter attacks on the Relgian front showed the menace seen by the German high command In further progress northward by this movement around Roulers. Presumably heavy German reserve forces have been concentrated at the?e two points to meet the danger. The time .seems ripe for smashing attacks at other points weakened necessarily by withdrawal of reserves to make these concentration?. The outstanding feature of the whole allied campaign ha been the wonderful flexibility of the forces, the rapidity with which whole armies can be moved from sector to ector. appearing on new fronts almost overnight. The enemy has been surprised repeatedly and a hr part of the credit for the allied advance, it is believed here. Is due to the fact that increasing preponderance of men and material, supplemented by a vastly superior motor truck equipment have restored the element of surprise to battle strategy.
