The cement block barn owned by Dot and James Jones, just north of the 11. & O. tracks at I.ake Wawasee and near the Jones hotel, was destroyed by lire early Tuesday evening. The loss is quite heavy as the barn was tilled with grain, hay. etc. No live stock was lost. Several hundred people from around the lake gathered, hut as there was no tire lighting apparatus, could render no assistance. A small amount of insurance was tarried on the building. This is the second barn to burn on the same site. The origin of the tire is unknown. Harney of the state council of defense would arrive in F-lkhart to investigate the continued improvement of two streets here which the county defense council had disapproved, M. I. Demarest. president of the board of work?, stated: I "We are proceeding vruh the (preparations for the improvement !of W. Lexincton av. and X. Michigan t.. and will continue to do so until we. icceive orders to stop by those in authority." Mr. Demarest declares the county council 'ook action to prevent the paving before the board of works had a chance to give its reasons for I ordering the improvement. "Instead of taking up the matter with us. as is usually the way, the members of the countj defence council talked to our employes and then evidently ba.sed their decision on information gleaned from them." declared Mr. Demarest. "When they saw that we were going ahead with the work, they appealed to the state council. I'm sure the state authorities will allo us to continue." Having provided for the financial welfare of Flkhart for the coming year, the city council, when It meets in a regular session Thursday evening, will lay aside money matters and again take up the regjlation of trathc within the business district of the city.
