Immediately a large crowd of whites gathered and threatened the Negro with violence, but the police managed to get him safely to the police station. Sporadic outbursts, in which one Negro was shot to death, ani others badly beaten, occurred during the day. A large number of atrests were made. Plans to relieve freight congestion in the middle west were outlined here Monday at a meeting of representative Iowa and Illinois shippers, at which, it was proposed to reopen the line of the Keokuk and Western railroad from Loansport. Ind., to Omaha, Neb. It was decided at the meeting to appoint a committee to ask Kailroad Director McAdoo to reopen the line.
