I'uncan Ccimpbt-11 to Frederic j von Muller: "(Jnly from the wta.zi ii'-'i soul of a political pot toiler i could come tuth an effort to maKe i partisan capital out of the anxiety j and anguish oi the fathers anJ ; mothers of our .oMiers. American troops, including thoso from Mishawaka. are holding a j sector of the French front: they may ; be holding a much greater sector hy , May. He cautious in the purchases of gewgaws. Don't prepare too much for hilarity. Don't be a glutton for show or luxury. It is a so- ; rious summer ahead. Increase your useiulhess in every possible way. m Former I'res't Taft is a wise man and a good democrat in all things save voting the ticket. The contemplation of peace is verv sweet, hut to put it in pla.n , words the United States need not waste its time talking about peace until it has everlastingly lammed hell out of something". An Osceola subscriber says he i ' going to send us a rabbit pretty soon. That is what we would Cail .downright malevolence, for the same amount of express money would pay freight on a rooster, a catfish, or a crow, or something , tempting to the appetite. . "What does it mean to 'interpret , a food price?" asks the inouisiti e i Mishawakj hotel hoarder. We can't tell exactly, hut every time the committee interprets the dealers h'ist the prices. A Sunday lecturer in Boston declared there is no hell, and there could be no justification for hurni.iff j a human soul throughout eternity. We would like to ask this man wh.it is to become of the creatures who poui'P the soldiers, or those gossip monpers who strive tu ruin the character of their neighbors, if there is no hell? Many a highly intelligent man in this country thinks the people are not really capable of self-government because they have not pickd him up bodily and set him down in a big fat office. But he is dead wrong about it. A town hoy learns to sleep in a night shirt before a country boy does, but the country boy who is ambitious doesn't mind that, because he knows the circumstances ill enable him to beat the town boy for the legislature in after life. Our spiritual adviser, Rev. L. C. Hogers, caught us with a cigar between our teeth last Sunday. Of course we were outside the church, which helped some, but the rector bad inferred from a paragraph in this column on that very day that we had quit the weed. We had t" explain we merely discussed the effects of the fragrance of tobacco from a theoretical and not from any practical standpoint. Our explanation, we are happy to say. was quite satisfactory to the dear brother of the cloth.. W if The giil of the old-time, would say, "1 have nothing to wear." and then rig out in chemises, pantalets, three petticoats, a skirt dragging the ground ;r.d a waist with a collar climbing ov-r her ears. The irl of today say.-. "1 have nothing to fur." and if vlu is really up-to-date. .he is telling the truth about it. A Miii iwaka f t ieiid kio.v wlu.t Methodism wants t--has to do with republicans and democrats in a countr. where church and f-tate are et. tr; ted. Somebody is demanding that the lobster palaces of New York closv. Why? The lob.-ters that are eaten are worth nothing to the real peopl of the war, and the lobsters who do the eating don't amount to anything more than a lower cast "c" box full of naughts. When i man will lay oft a K'u-u-day job to try to catch a 125-cent string oi tish, it is a sign that spring i.s hiking this way. .Such things are already happening in Mishawaka. otto Iang and Dan Ward invaded the Michigan ponds the past week. They say the Lnglish do not recognize our honorary titles of colonel and judge They simply can't understand it. They ought to knowthat men are born colonels and judges here just as they are born knights and earls in England. Some men are so devilish, jvlien they get to the forks of the road they stop and inquire the wrong way so they will be sure to take it. That iö one reason why there are so many republicans. . Man is the architect of his own fortunes, and woman is architect of her own figure until she connects with the middle ago spread. We know of several republican in Mishawaka who would preferably vote for the kaiser were ho to run for president of the United States on the republican ticket than for a good clean cut American belonging to the democratic school. As we say, we know them, and believe they ought to be shot or interned until after the next general election The Methodist preachers who are assigned to rural charges are in big

luck when it comes to the cats, but if we hel l a pastorate like that w; should insist upon acceptinK chicken and e's on salary at the rate of a dollar and two hits a dozen for the fryers and a dime a dozen for the eKgs. Arthur Schellender asks us if it is proper "yarns ?" to designate lie ,s Well, not exactly; if lies were yari s you could get eight pairs of socks for a dime and a tirst-clas overcoat for a dollar and a half. An east end lady friend tells us she would like to put her arms around former Pres't Taft's neck. Well, perhaps she might reach around his neck, hut it would take pome pinions to encircle him otherwise. There is an incessant demand for cooks for the army. We hope, however, our gallant soldiers will not have to eat the kind of stuff the average cook puts up for the civilian population. Matters will become so serious before midsummer that women will have very little appetite for idle pleasures, but even at that her yearning for the simple duties will not he keen enough to cause her to prefer' washing the dishes to an hour with Douglas Fairbanks at her favorite hlmie. We trust Kd. Byrkit has informed himself us to the trend of public opinion in regard to the necessity of a change in the administration of the public schools. The board meets Tuesday night, and we would suitrest that he does a little preliminary reconnoitering previous to taking the t-tep which i0 per cent of the population is anxious should be taken. In deference to the wishes of a married chap who gets Thursday nights off, we have arranged to pub. lih the bow 11ns scores hereafter that his wife may be able to s-?e his name in the News-Times the following morning, and may thus know by such unimpeachable evidence that all married men are not given to fabricating even though un able to distinguish between a J j "strike" and a scliooner ..f Prnmon:i i Emit std. PERUNA. Every woman should have at hand a reliable means of checking colds, coughs and grin. It is her duty to protect the members of the family, to prevent the development of catarrh, to overcome its frequent appearance, and to use a reliable family tonic whenever the appetite is irregular and the digestion weak. There are many thousand houst wives in this country who have learned from experience the value of the old reliable Peruna in such cases. Many of them tell their experiences for your benefit.

SANDY M'TAVISH WRITES FROM ENGLAND I'iper shandy McTavish of the second Canadian reserve battalion, stationed at West Sandling camp, Kent, England, has written a letter to th.3 News-Times in which he tells of receiving a Christmas box from tho Mishawaka lied Cross. lie speaks in enthus.'aütic terms of the contents and mentions particularly Mrs. M. W. Mix in his appreciation. He also got a copy of the Christmas number of the News-Times Mishawaka edition which he says was great. The list of names of Mishawaka boys who had enlisted up to that time and which was printed in the Christmas edition, impressed Sandy very much. He describes it as wonderful and says Mishawaka has reason to feel proud of her sons. Sandy cuts his letter short with the excuse that Fritz aeroplanes are overhead again, but that they visit his cämp so often they are beginning to look on their coming as something of a joke. Catarrhal Indications take

Mrs. Wra. Hohmann, 2764 Lincoln Ave., Chicago. I1L, writes: 'I suffered with catarrh of bronchial tubes and had a terrible cough ever since a child. 'I would sit up in bed with pillows propped up behind me, but still the cough would not let me sleep. "So reading the papers about Penma I decided to try. without the least fcit of hope that it would do me any good. But after taking three bottles I noticed a change. My appetite got better, so I kept on, never discouraged Finally I seemed not to cough so much and the pains in my chest got better and I could rest at night. "I am well now and cured of a chronic cough and sore throat. I cannot tell you how grateful I am, and 1 cannot thank Peruna enough.

German Airmen Driven Back by American Guns UV XL1VTOX C. PAPilvi:. International News Sen In-: WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE, Feb. 16. Following x two-nour bombardment ot the American trenches with tterman gas shells on Thur.Mlay night, the Boche airmen tried yesterday to get behind the American lines to drop bombs upon cities and military works, but were driven off.
