Prospects of War Time Teams
By Jack o. .-j tiii: si:natoks. Ni;V YOIUC. Keb. Clark Griffith's Washington Senators have never burned up the American league. At odd times they have made threats, hut as a rule mid-season found them firmly entrenched in the second division. This habit seems to be a characteristic of the Senators, and a slance or two at the club roster holds forth but little promise of anything like a reat reversal of form next summer. News from Kansas recently of Walter Johnson's being1 placed in class four of the national draft assures CI riff of his pitching ace a.-ain this year. That is, of course, unless Griff gets the trading or selling fever. With Johnson as the kins' pin of his pitching staff the "old fox" is assured of some enviable drawing power on the road and at home, and the Washington club may safely be credited with about 20 victories rieht now. Hut Johnson cannot pitch Washington into the first division, and there is no telling how many frames the Kreat Kansan will lose because of weakness in the lineup around him. Grouped with Johnson on the pitching staff, Griff has Ayers. I)umont. Harper, Shaw an Yin.lin.?. who will try a comeback. In addition he has several recruits. I)u-

a So HEL? Aie, 1 of RUku RnmL Rmtmi I Veiocki mont, h'haw and Ayers are reason ably strong- pitchers, the former being good enouKh for any club in the league. Harper may improve his value if he overcomes his wildnessr and if he does Washington will have a pretty strong staff. Ainsmith and Henry are seasoned catchers of unquestionable value, and both will be back in the harness, according to present indications, so Griff's catching department will be as strong as usual. The acquisition of Bert Shotten from the Browns will acd strength to the outfield, hotten will be one of the regulars and Clyde Milan, of course, will hold down a regular berth, too. Itice, shanks and II. Milan will do most of the battling for the odd position. Dr. John Iavan may gobble up the job at short if he doesn't think too much of his dentistry business to report. Craft, Garrity and Judge will all be tried at tirst base, and Morgan and Foster will probably fight it out for second. Third bae is a problem. Foster ran play the jstion. o can Mcliride and Shanks, and Griff may find a way out of the difficulty of filling the berth. The Senators haven't been greatly strengthened. They are but little stronger than they were last season, if any at all. Their chances for 1 9 1 S are, therefore, anything but brilliant. Still, you never can tell what a ball club will do.

U. S. Patent OCSct. NATIONAL OWNERS A Public Offers for Players of Other Clubs Condemned. Rickey Complains. Associated Press Service: NEW YORK, Feb. 13. National league baseball club owners went on record at the final session of the annual schedule meeting here Tuesday as condemning the practice of club owners or managers making public offers for players of other clubs. Action was taken after P.ranch Rickey of St. Louis had made an earnest speech in which he complained of the Chicago Nationals. Walter Craighead, who represented Pres't Weeghman of the Chicago club at the meeting denied any intention of injuring the St. Louis club in trying to get the services of Hornsby pnd asserted that there was no undue publicity given to the efforts of the Chicago management in doing so. Rickey insisted that the public bidding for the player had made Hornsby dissatisfied and caused the club owners considerable difficulty in retaining him. While not censuring any of the Chicago club's officials the league decided that in future such practices should be discontinued. On motion of the St. Louis club the league rescinded its ruling of two years ago prohibiting clubs from withdrawing waivers except in the case of a. drafted player. Trips to Stop Twin HUI: Pres't Kbbetts of Brooklyn proposed to have postponed games played off at any time during, the season. After this suggestion was defeated he attempted to have double headers eliminated completely from the season's play, but this also met wdth adverse vote. Messrs. Dreyfuss, Hemstead and r.akcr were appointed a committer to confer with the American league, which will tneet here Thursday in respect to the fixing of uniform prices of admission to ball parks in view of the war tax problem. Regardless of the Baltimore club's suit against the National and American leagues, it is understood that all financial matters between the major organizations and the representatives of the Pittsburgh. Newark and Brooklyn Federal league clubs will be adjusted within a few das. Pres't Hemstead, Raker and Ehhctts were appointed to na?t with a similar committee from the American league to formulate plans for the disposal of abandoned ball parks in these cities as soon as this settlement was consummated. . K. World's Series Coin Split. Tho report of the committee on the new division of the world series money was approved and a set r,f club rules to govern players at home and on the road was adopted. Only two deal: were announced here today. The Philadelphia Nationals bought Miles Main, a pitcher, from the Louisville club and the Boston Americans purchased outfielder George Whiteman from Toronto. Manager Harrow also announced that outfielder Strunk had signed his contract with the Roston Red Sox. Try NEWS-TIMES WANT AD -JOINT--ECITAL OLIVER HOTEL Tapestry Room Thursday, Feb. 14th 8:30 p. m.
