N. D. PREP FIVE IN DEBUT TONIGHT I Coach Andrews to Send Men Against Michigan City Team. Coach podie" Andrews will M-nd rii-; Notre Dame preps a-'ainst the fast MichiL'an City hasketl-.ill team in the Notre Dame gymnasium at S o'clock this evening. It will he the first appearance of the newly organized hasketeers on their home court. De.io will play rit;ht forward; McDay. lert forward; Kirk, enter; McCJrath. ri'ht uard: Prady. left forward. Coach Andrews further announced that Thompson. Pailey, and Woods would undoubtedly have an effort to show their ability before the Same is finished. Only the lightest kind of work was handed out by Coach Harper to the Notre Danie varsity basketball men yesterday afternoon. The leniency of the coach was no doubt due to the stiff practice he put his men through on Monday. Individual shooting and a rehearsal of the team's passwork was all that was attempted, and Harper sent his prote-'es tu the dressing room without having any scrimmage. A hard workout will no doubt be in order today. Probably it will be the last of the season as the old and blue quintet travel to Crawfordsville Friday to stack up against the strong Wabash team in the final jrarne of the year. Track Coach Kockne is hard put for men aailahle for his track team ri'ht now. Sweeney, Van WoiiterKhen. lurphy and O'Connor, of hi? distance men. are all more or less ailing from sore feet. Call and liarbert are the only ones in y.-nul physinl shape. Harbert showed immense improvement over hN preious workouts yesterday afternoon when he stepped a mile and a half in the fastest time of his career. Call went three-quarters of a mile at a respectable clip; Parry, Miller. Liukard and Patterson ran MO ards fast enough to satisfy the coach. Oilfillan. Kockne's star in :ie or six events, has been called to his home in .Joliet. but he is expected back today to reume his training. Hard workouts are on the boards for this week to put the squad in shape for the Illinois meet on the -j-rd of this month. ar Time Teams VeiockPaskert. with Mann, Flack and Färber, the latter purchased from Paltimore, should form a strong outlieldintr combination. Mitch also has Pill McCabe, a slugging recruit from Jack Holland's Hutchinson club of the Western league, who may make all of 'em step to beat him out. Th Cub iniield is the real problm Mitchell has to solve, and yet he can show something in the way of talent. Kilduff Deal, Merkl?, Zeider. Hollacher. Pechous. Wortman and Iar represent the intield strength of the liruins. It is said that Deal will be groomed for rir;t base if Merkle fails to hang on, and Pete Kilduff is practically certain to hol down second, providing, of course, that Charley Hollacher comes through at short. Uar. who h called a second Heinie Zim. is the gamble for the third basing job. So with Wormian, Zeider. Deal and Pechous all fighting, the Cub cushion defenders who win jobs wi'.l have to show ome steam. In addition to the new battery stars secured by the Cubs Mitchell has Vauphn, Douglas. Hendryx. Weaver, Carter, Aldridge and Walker in his pitching corral, and Daly, Klliott a.id o'Farrell to fight it out for the econd-string catching job. To say the least those Cubs look mighty good. They look to be a sure one-two-three club right now, and asid ? from the Giants they ar j the strongest club in the league on pa jter. NAB PASTOR SLIPPING NOTE TO PRISONER SALT LAKK CITY. Utah, Feb. 13 Itev. Henry Iesman, pastor of. St. Paul's Evangelical church of Ogden, arrested when he attempted Sunday to pass a note to a prisoner at Fort Douglas internment camp, declared Tuesday the missive was given to him by a woman who had attended his church services. He declared his part in the affair was innocent but that he had since learned the woman, who. he said, represented herself as the bride of the prisoner was a dangerous person. Peesman said he was certain the man to whom he gave the note, .which was returned to him was not the prisoner but a federal employe. The minister said it was a short letter referring to money matters. L,eesman was still in custody Tuesday. Federal officials would not discuss the matter. ROOSEVELT IMPROVES NEW YORK. Feb. 13. Theodore Roosevelt continued to make progress at the Koosevelt hospital and it was believed Tuesday night that he had made up the ground lost in the setback of Sunday. A bulletin issued at the hospital said: "This has been Col. Koosevelt's most comfortable day." and that "his progress is likely to be uninterrupted from now on." HOLDS I V I'LAVEItS. KANSAS CITY. If you wish to stay in business we advise you to read the following. yie existing coal shortage in mid-winter puts all manufacturers face to face with the most serious fire problem in the history of business. Hundreds of plants are employing dangerous secondary means of heating. Is yours? Hundreds are depending on frozen fire equipment or on sprinkler systems drained to prevent freezing. How about yours? Do you realize that frozen equipment is worse than no equipment? that gasoline torches used for thawing frozen pipes are causing innumerable fires? Do you realize that city fire departments are seriously handicapped by cold ? And by snow? And do you know that insurance officials and fire chiefs consider the situation alarming? The only thing that can make a plant safe today is Pyrene. For Pyrcne extinguishers do not freeze even at 50 below zero. Light and quick and deadly to incipient fires. Especially adapted to killing incendiary or other quick starting dangerous blazes. Have you plenty of Pyrenes in your plant? Order at once if you haven't. Remember your motortrucks, too! - Watch out for incendiaries. They are loose everywhere. If they haven't reached you as yet, they may pay their respects any day. '' Gall the police instantly if you see suspicious persons near your plant. Every factory or motor truck burned helps the Kaiser.
