as though to f-hade them from the l:,'ht while Hi- Vinson's head was pr--ed against th former's shoulder. ThOr arras were locked about each other in an attitude which sjestel that they had liin tlown to s!eoj, in that position. Willis' eyes were open and neither face was drawn or in anv way distorted. Iist Sxmi Sunday. That the men were last sc-en alie at the boarding house of Mrs. Mary Johnson, 114 N. Mill st.. where they tr-ok dinner Sunday raon, leads to the belief that they came to their dath between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon. Mrs. Gilbauh state: that when she (tilled other loomers at 0 o'clock Mond iy inornin', she heard the deep breathing of the men and knew nothing of the tragedy until ho stumbled uj)on if in the afternoon. Supposing that the men had pone out, the opened the door and entered after first knocking three or four times. She sensed at once that something was wronp and rushed across the street to the police station where she explained, with difhculty what had occurred. Mrs. Tilbauh did not know the name of the strange man whom Ilissinson had brought with him to his room Sunday morning and it was some time before his identity was discovered. Coroner T. J. S.vantz, who was notified shortly after, made a preliminary examination of the bodies and took the mysterious lass with him for analysis. He stated that death may have resulted from alcoholic poisoning, hut admitted that the plass might have contained either strychnine or prussic acid. He made no attempt to state what the cause was, but intimated that it was probably poisoning whether suicidal or accidental will probably never be known. No papers of any importance wer.- found on the bodies. In the pocket of Willis was a pur-e containing $.2'. Moth men were fairly well dres.-ed. Their overcoats had been thrown over the foot of the unused lied in the room, apparently when the men were sober. At noon Sunday they appeared to be normal. Willis left his boarding place at the home of John King. 120 K. Sixth St., early Sunday morning, saying that he had an invitation out for dinner, and did not return after that. In all probability the men went up to I Iitri?inson's rom immediately after eating and proceeded to get rid of the liquor secured Saturday nitiht. Poison Theory Likely. It is unlikely that death could have tonic from the liquor they had taken, .as the contents of one flask of whisky and three or four pint bottles of beer would not have killed both. Their attitude would suggest a suicide pact or a drunken stupor in which death might have come from some poison accidentally taken. No verdict has, been rendered and a post mortem examination and inquest will probably take place today. The bodies were removed to the 1 'inch and Sprague undertaking establishment. Higginson is well known about town, having several times fallen into diflieulties which led to the courts. His wife secured a divorce from him on the grounds of cruelty, and he had repeatedly threatened her life. He is survived by four children, a son. H.V.e. and three daughters. Amber, Until and Uea-tri'-e. and one sister. He was probably between K and 00 years old. Willis has a daughter, Mrs. 'banes Pe lktrd. who lives in S.uth P.end, and a son in Klgin, 111. He has lived at the Kinfr home for the I a st several weeks and was employ ,1 at the Kubber Regenerating Co., gcing there from the Hodge 'o His habits were apparently steady and there is no known reason why either he or Higginson should have entered into a suicide pact. He appeared to lie about 7.." Veal':- old. Called IIoiiv4 of .Mystery. The house in which the tragedy occurred has been called Mish.iwaka's house of mystery. Four deaths of an unnatural or tnysterioa nature hae occurred there with: n the past two years. Mrs.
Iii'; augii's husband drank carboli' at id and died there a year ago lat August and 1 1 ivs following that a young man by the name of Limit was found in one of the upper sleeping rooms apparent':: de;ul from gas poisoning. Mrs. (Jilbaitgh. who has two small children to sapport, is greatly o erwrougkt by the affair and -alTering fn-m nervous shock as the result of the gruesome disco cry. Scera! weeks ago the life of Mrs. tliibiugh wa endangered by a former roomer. John 'Keefe. who att icked Kra Henry with a hammer when lie interfered and seerly injured him. 'Keef is now waiting trial in the circuit court for assault and battery with intent to kill. That the place is peculiarly unfortunate is evident (ront the many tragic happenings which have occurred within the house or nearby. It was within the very yard that V;:;:.tm S.-hultz. well known 'upholsterer, feil dead a few weeks ago. The house itself is gloomy and depressing in appearance and its unsawry history will no doutt make it a landmark in Mishawaka.

EDWARD LEYES WRITES FROM CAMP HANCOCK
The large-t shipment yet made by the Mishawaka chapter of the lied Cross society left the headquarters at the city hall Tuesday forenoon for the national headquarters to be sent at once to France. The let contained r,S2:i pieces of knitted and hospital goods and represents the work of Mishawaka women since Jan. 10th when the last shipment went out. The shipment contained the following pieces: 24 3 sweaters. 1G0 pairs of socks, Jü pairs of wristlets, 00 helmets, S' knitted pieces for the Belgian relief from the high school, löl pieces for baby kits, 100 pairs of pajamas, 4 7 bed shirts, 12 0 handkerchiefs, 10 wash cloths, lu pairs of bed socks. 10 fracture pillows and 4,603 pieces of surgical dressings. Mrs. L. T. McCollurn is chairman of the knitted goods department, Mrs. I C. Rogers of the scwir.g. and Miss Marie (Ireen of the surgical dressings. The women are anxious to voice their thanks and appreciation for the splendid cooperation of the women of the city in the preparation of this shipment and are enthusiastic in their praise of the loyalty of Mishawaka women. From 35 to 50 are busy at the rooms every day of the week that they are open, and a large class :n surgical dressings under Miss Green is just completing a course of instruction. These women and girls will in turn he qualified to instruct and many more classes will undoubtedly be organized. The paramount need is in this department and women are earnestly urged to give their services in this department. The actual entry of our boys into the fighting has necessitated the use of large quantities of these supplies and the government and the Fad Cross society depend largely upon the women of the United States to keep the supply filled.

Private Kdward W. Leyes. a Mishawaka boy now stationed at Camp Hancock, Augusta, (la., has written a letter to The News-Times in which he says: "This is a good sized camp. It covers in the neighborhood of 20,000 acres, all the ranges included. About 4 3,000 men are here at present and more coming every day. We are about six miles out of Augusta on the Georgia railroad. We have been in quarantine for nearly a month on account of mumps. However they surely do their best to conquer all such epidemics. We are now released. The exercises arc a great benefit to us. We had about three hours this afternoon and worked up a good sweat. Old Sol doing his share. I'm sure such. weather would be welcome in Mishawaka at present. "It surely does seem like home to smoke and have a News-Times to top it off."
While there are said to bi close to :'00 alien enemies in Mishawaka. but barely 125 have called at the city hall and post oltice for registration. This has led to the belief that some may havt refused to register, although there have as yet been no cases reported. Should the local authorities tind of any one who voluntarily fails to comply with the orders of the government, the federal authorities will be at once notified and the proper action taken which will probably mean imprisonment during the duration of the war. Those who have been registered so have for the most part done so willingly and without complaint. Many are old residents of the city, who when they secured their first papers of citizenship uppostd
I themselves to be full-fledged and
accepted citizens. Th laxity of Indiana laws has contributed to the negligence of aliens in securing the necessary second papers, as they are permitted to vote and enjoy the full prerogatives of the American born, after supplying" themselves with the first papers only.
CITY SCHOOLS WILL REOPEN WEDNESDAY
All public schools of the city will reopen Wednesday morning after two weeks of enforced idleness due to the coal famine. The high school and Main buildings which are heated from the same source, were opened Monday noon, as was the P.eiger school, in the east end. Suflicient coal has been secured to reopen the remaining buildings and studies will be resumed Wednesday. While the grammar schools will undoubtedly be forced to keep open into the summer, the high school and junior high will conduct clashes on Saturday and the daily periods will no doubt be lengthened in order that the older scholars may bo relea-ed in May for war service work in the gardens, on nearby farms and ;n the factories where special war orr.er.s will be manufactured.

DEFENDS WAR CONTRACTS ON "COST PLUS"' BASIS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 1li: The much attacked "cost phis profit" system under which contracts for the national army cantonments were built was defended today by Prig. Gen. Rittell and his aides, in testifying in the final branch of the senate military committee's war inquiry. Gen. Littell, v.ho declared the plan had saved the government money, had not given contractors excessive fees and had speeded completion of the camps. Reports of exorbitant wages paid workmen were declared to be exaggerated. While the military committee was investigating the cantonment contracts the senat? judiciary committee took up the bill sent to the capitol last weelc by Pres't Wilson proposing unlimited authority for the executive to reorganize and coordinate government departments and bureaus. A sub-committee headed by Sen. Overman was appointed, to proceed with consideration of the hill. Both senate and house remained silent today on the question f war efficiency and organization. Several senators prepared speeches for delivery later this week.
