THROUGH MOTOR EXPRESS South Bend to be on Proposed Auto Transportation Route. Proposed establishment of a motor express and freight transportation service by the Glen Motor and Tractor Transportation Co. of Chicago is expected to relieve the freight and express traffic congestion in many cities ef the middle west, including the city of South Pend. Sec'y Pmmons of the Chamher of Commerce Wednesday received a letter from the company outlining its plans in regard to the establish1 ment of the proposed routes. South Pend and Elkhart are included in the cities to be on the transportation line of the company. Five-ton motor trucks are to be used, and the plan is for the deliveries of freight and express to he made at the doors of the consignees. They will also collect freight and express in the same manner. A main line, with a depot located probably at the edge of the city lim its. will be established. In addition to the main line, there will be a line of what are called switch motors that will deliver and collect consignment, taking them to the main line station. In making the deliveries and collections, the switch trucks will be ( jeft until they are either loaded or i unloaded. In the event of loading. the trucks will then be taken to the main line where they will be attached to a long train of these mo- ! tor trucks ready for the journey. A through line of both express and freight transportation is to be established between Chicago and South P.end, and extending on to Plkhart. It is believed that the proposed line will do much toward j relieving freight and express coni gestion. while it will at tne ame time leave the railroads freer to j handle government transportation, i . ... , , . : ; i a na wai iit'ii'.'Muva. i In operating the proposed lines, i motor trucks suitable to travel on . . any kind of roads, and will not damage street are to be used. UNCLE Sfii CALLS
OR INSPECTORS Men Physically Disqualified For Army and Technically Fit Signal Corps. An opportunity for men physically disqualified for r?gular army service, in a call received in South Pend today from the Chicago inspection 1 section of the equipment division. Fnited States signal corps, to list all technically eiualified men. capable land willinr, to act as expert in- ) spectors of the signal corps equip ment. Charles P. Calvert, of the Indiana and Michigan Electric Co.. local branch chairman of the Military Training Camps association, has leoeied a notificr tion from the war department, together with application blanks and all information conceri.vp this opporunity for service. This section of the war department is really a vast engineering body organized to conduct inspections of signal corps equipment during manufacture so as to maintain the high standard demanded fear our troops. The importance of this expert work cannot be overestimated. As an illustration of the variety of inspections thit are required, the following table of materials for one airplane, exclusive of the engine, is a go'd example: Nails Screws ' Steel Stampings 1'orgings Turnbuckles Yenorr. square feet.... Wire, feet Yarnish, gallons 1 ope, gallons Aluminum, pounds Publa r. feet Linen, square yards.... Spruce, feet Pine, feet Ash, feet Hickory, feet 4, H21 7!s 2 7 U cr, ?, 1 201 244 5S ni 1V2 Guarding Asainst Salndapo. The lives of our whole fighting forces depend upon the perfect and adequate production of all signal equipment, includirg airplanes and radio telephone and telegraph systems. There is probably no place where defect in material would '.-ring greatest disaster than in an .vrplane, or in the equipment which transmits orders for advances or reinlorccments or directs the artillery fire of our fighting forces. Production must be speeded up so that our armies can be equipped with every technical instrument that will help save the lives of our soldiers. The Ki.ul of Men Wanted. The signal corps is looking for the type of men who are technically and practically trained along mechanical, electrical, wood working and textile lineis. There is no age limit to men who will do this inspection, although older men with the greatest practical experience will be given preference. Inspectors retain their civilian status, receiving salaries ranping from Jl.liOo to $1,S00 petyear. Application blanks and information may be had from Mr. Calvert, local branch chairman. WATCH CO.
