Put th"re is a little rhyme ahout "littl? ::rains of sand" that 1 learned when I was a little child, and I think lhtio era ins of tobacco will mount up just as rapidly and find their way across the sea to carry a mc.-saee of cheer from home. We are learning more and more about tho pleasure that "godmothers" can eive to soldiers. The correspondencebetween "eodmotho. s" anil "efdsons" has been productive of much happiness and Riven couraeo to many downcast ones. And one of the duties of a "eodmothor," you must know, is to supply her "eodsons" with tobacco. 1 am lucky to have more than GO "sodsons" and they have let me know how many smokes they need, so that I can perform ray duty toward them. For those who do not smoke there is, of course, an extra portion of candy. Soldiers like candy as much as we homo folk do. War does not affect the sweet tooth at all. and the cnerey afforded by c.mdy is considered jool for lieditinir men. So let's pive the hoys all the smokes wc can, and for those who do not smoke let's remember a box of candy. Economy Calendar bean in laree quantities. There is I little advantage in Luvine; it un roasted because few persons are skillful enoueh to roast it properly. But not only is coffee cheaper but it is better when boueht in the bean, because keine uneround it cannot loose its davor. Moreover when you buy coffee in the bean you are reasonably sure you are not buying ehickory. or any other form of adulterant. At this time of the year a hie supply of nuts may wisely b, boueht. Those aro very easy to store as they need simply , to bo placed In wooden boxes or b irlap bags in a dry place. Of course in lieu of the war situation it is considered unpatriotic to buy quantities of the foods that art? scarce. Tho woman that hoards su-ar or the woman that lays in fat sides of bacon is as truly as unpatriotic as the woman who fails to see- that stale bread is not otilized In her kitchen. Put thrie is no reason why we should rot store any of the staid' food that h is not been almost requisitioned bv t he tov o-nment, as have sugar, wheat, beef and pork. LABOR STRENGTHENS BRITISH GOVERNMENT POSITION IN WAR Ildernatieiiial News Service: LONDON. Dec. 2(j. The position of the Pritish government in its stanel on peace was greatly strengthened today by the action of the national labor conference in voting for a continuation of the war. This attitude taken by labor was hoildy significant in view of the fact that it followeel tho offer of Germany ami Austria to make peace on a basis ef no annexations ror indemnities. Both lhiglanel anel Prance, through members of their governments, hive rojoidiate-el tho Teutonic offer to negediate peace on a basis- of the status epio ante bellum and it is unlikely that the circular note being lrafted by Leon Trotzky, ;he bdsheviki fereign minister at Petre?rad, will be answered. It is possiUe. however, that a statement on peace will bo maele by some member of the Pritish or French government which may be accepted by tho bedsheviki as an answer trj their imitation to all the allies to enter a general peace conference. Th-ro is a elisposition to believe that the Austro-German peace orfr is tb beginning of a new "peace drive" and that another offer will soon be forthcoming, preihably through some neutral source NAME A TEMPORARY PRESIDENT OF PORTUGAL Intrioitb nnl News S rvi f: l IdSMON.
