DEMAND LA FOLLETTE OUSTED FROM SENATE
ST. PA t'U Sept. Kxpulsion of Sen. Robert M. La Follctte of Wisconsin from the I'nited States senate, is demanded in a petition uddr ss-.l to that body Tuesday by the Minnevota public safety commission. Sen. Ii l'ollette is accused in the commission resolution of making an a.dre.s of disloyal and seditious nature at the Nonpartisan league convention here last Thursday nicht. The commission also referred to th' I'nited States flistrict attorney th matter of the conduct of Sen. Martin, chairman of the appropriations committee and democratic floor leader, urged sharp scrutiny of what he termed extravagant and almost reckless appromental estimates. He said appropriations during five months of war would reach about $20,000.000,000 and expressed concern lest next year's total might be $50,000.000,000. Must Watch Closely. "We are compelled to shut our eyes and appropriate a great deal rather than hamper our men on the battle field," said the senator. "Hut our duty to scrutinize these estimates prows every hour. We mut ie every dollar necessary to prosecute the war. but our duty is to cut down extravagant and useless appropriations. The government's finances are in a perilous situation. "Are we going to impoverish the country? Yes, if necessary to win this war but in God's name don't let us spend money unless absolutely necessary-" Over the democratic leader's opposition the senate adopted to 26 an amendment by Sen. SUBMARINE CHASER LAUNCHED AT ST. JOE ST. JOSEril. Mioh., Sept. 26. The (tackling of glass, the strange aroma o,f dripping champagne and the words "I christen you Miss Toledo." and with a swish of water the twin cities' first real war craft slid into the canal from the PachelCarter boat plant, located between the two cities. The boat is a 60 foot sub chaser.
