MOTORIST PROBLEM SOLVED FOR NEWS-TIMES READERS By WM. H. STEWART, JR. Present Stewart Automobile School of New Torfe.

Motoring Department. The NewsTimes l would like to have you help me out on a few question;?. I have a l'Jr, Chevrolet car run 4.S00 miles. Runs all rieht on loel road, hut when on a hill slows up and s ems to hae no power. As I open the throttle up there is a sizzing noisi- somewhere from motor. I m i.le mixture a little richer, hut it is jut the same. Just had carhon s r.ip d out and spark plug's cleaned. When it slows on the hill there in some knock. When I start I have to go very en.xy or motor will strip and can't iret away quick, it will sizz and slow down. Do you think the timing gear has anything to do with it? Is there any ohject In having a valve put on the side of tho intake manifold to admit air? Would it he of any use for priming in cold weither? Could I use hot water through it to

clean carhon from cylinders? I am told this is all right by different parties, hut I would like some expert advice before I Invest. Is rain water better for batteries and radiator than hemlock. Thanking you for a reply, I am, B. W. The hiss is due to the engine leaking compression. Listen carefully, hold hand over ail possible places for leaks, or inject oil around them. Uuhhles will show where leak is located and Joints must then be tightened. Knock may he due to some carbon remaining or spark too far advanced, probably the latter. The timing goa.-s are not at fault. A small priming cup on inlet manifold will be excellent for priming, cleaning carbon, etc., also to see if mixture Is too rich. Use nothing hut distilled water for batteries. IVc any clean water for radiator, provided it is cleaned out three or four times a year with washing soda, nf course, rain water is better than water containing gypum or other mineral salts. Consult some steam engineer in your neighborhood as to tho kind of water you are using.

Motoring Department, The NewsTime My engine has developed a tendency to pop hack at the carburetor recently. It only occurs when engine has first started. It pops back repeatedly until wo havo run a few miles, when the noise stops and engine develops full power. Tho carburetor adjustments have not been changed, but I find I can reduce the trouble if I keep tho priming device on dash slightly pulled out. Any suggestions from you will be appreciated. C. T. U. The popping hack suggests a leaky valve or a lean mixture, probably duo to a leak in inlet manifold. Partly closing choke valve by priming device on dash offsets this by giving a richer mixture." When engine heats up the leak is closed and the trouble is ended. Inject oil around joints of inlet manifold while engine is running and see If it is sucked in. Tighten bolts at that point or replace the gasket.

Motoring Department, The NewsTimes Occasionally my Ford engine starts to run the instant I close tho switch: at other times it does not. I should like to have it start every time as it saves cranking. Is it possible to have this happen with any certainty? K. W. C. The ability to start on spark depends on tiuht piston rings, a freemoving crankshaft, good compression, a correct mixture and plenty of it. and a hot spark. Before stopping the engine speed it up by the throttle, open switch, and leao throttle opened until engine stops. This fills cylinders with fresh mixture, making it easy to start. As one piston is always on a power stroke tho spark is all that is necessary to start it. If no vibration occurs when switch is close. 1 tl,c timer segment is not in contact. Advance the spark slightly.

Motoring Department. Tho NewsTimes I find my engine oerheats a great deal during this hot spell. I run on high gear as much as possible, keep spark advanced and prevent engine racing, but still it overheats. Any suggestion will be appreciated. T. M. As you make no mention of cleaning out the radiator .and cooling system it is just possible that the system is cloggeii with scum or sediment. Dissolve two pounds rt washing soda in boiling water. Drain radiator, pour in Roda solution, fill radiator and run car as usual for an entire day. Drain off solution and fill with clean water. Change water again after a day or two.

Motoring Department. Tho NewsTimes My engine has developed a peculiar kink which I do not understand. It will fire a feu times and stop. If I prime the cylinders it will run on tho priming and then stop. I drew off a little water from tho bottom of tho carburetor, after which it ran well for a while, but tho trouble has returned. Please let me know what you think the trouble may bo. Undoubtedly tho water caused the engine to miss fire, but it keeps coming in from some outside source. Possibly the strainers are gone from tho tank where you buy your gasoline. The underground tank always contains a little water due to condensation, which is drawn up by tho pump. Strain tho gasoline through chamois skin or change your dealer.

Motoring Department. The NewsTimes I notice that there are different threads on the spark plugs listed in the catalogues. Please ht mo know what the difference is and how it came about. T. K. A. The European plugs are made to millimeter measurements. and so are called metric. These are not used on engines made in America. Tho first American plugs used the

Is'anixr nil r.iu n.- ia uil 11.1 J I -J III II gas pipe, as that i a standard hread. and the tools for making it

can be obtained anywhere in the United States. It has a tendency to leak, as the thread is somewhat coarse, so the technical branch of the Association of Licensed Automobile Engineers designed a plug of 7-S-inch diameter, carrying 1 $ threads to the inch. It uses a gasket to hold compression. The half-inch

Motoring Department, Tho NewsTimes There is a considerable bang in my engine, which is becoming quite troublesome. Engine has recently been overhauled, all parts properly lifted and well secured. It is not piston slap and there Is no carbon and no signs of overheating. The noise is greater while engine is under load, but it is also noticeable while dutch is out. Please give mo whatever suggestions you can. A. T. L. Parts may be properly secured when replaced, but there is always a possibility of their working loose. It would seem as if one of the cylinders was loose. Inspect tho bolts that hold them to the crank case. If j our engine has three-point suspension, one of the sides may be loose where it sets on the frame. See that ilywheel is tight on shaft.

Motoring Department, The NewsTimes Why does my Ford engine run b e '-.wards if I advance the spark wio n starting? If I retard the spark all the way it starts properly. Why should moving the spark lever have this effect? , L. C. B. Because tho spark is brought into the compression stroke when lever is advanced. The explosion meets tho piston coming up and so pushes it down. reversing its motion. When retarded the explosion Is brought into the power stroke, pushing the piston the right way. After engine has started it is necessary to advance the spark, as this brings the explosion pressure higher in th piston travel and makes the engine run faster, but it is dangerous to crank engine in the advanced position, as there is danger of a back-kick and severe injury to the operator.

Over 50 makes have already advanced in price. Hudsons, too, must cost more.

Motoring Department, Th NewsTimes Please settle a point in controversy. When a car rolls over while making a turn, which wheels leave the ground first, tho inside or the outside. Thanking you. M. L It. Th inside wheels leave the ground first, as the car rolls away from the center about which it turns. This can be proved by tying a stone to a string and rolling It about your

self as a pivot. When you let go the

string the stone rolls away from you.

Nearly every make of car, except the Hudson, has lately increased in price. Cars that sold at SI 200 and S1400 now cost about as much as SuperSix. Since January, 5 1 makers of automobiles have announced price increases amounting to Si oo to S700. The necessity of buying materials on today's market has forced these increases. Steel costs five times as much as it did at the beinnin of the war. Cotton, rubber all items that enter into the manufacture of an automobile now cost more than ever before. Hudsons will cost more when the present stock of materials, bought

last year at lower prices, is exhausted. There is no way of avoiding it. The price advantage that other cars once held no longer exists. Hudson has been the most wanted car, regardless of price. It will be more popular than ever now that cheaper cars have advanced in price. We know the number of cars from present material supplies that we arc to get. At the rate of present sales present prices can not be continued long. Some models will be advanced in price within one month. Now is the time to get a Hudson Super-Six. Have its use the remainder of the summer and throughout the fall. Save the money that delay will necessitate your paying for a Hudson.
