That is entirely erroneous. The treasury department did not ask newspaper publishers for free advertising, because I realize that the newspaper's only profitable commodity is advertising space, and that there are many papers which are not able to give free advertising, especially in view of the hi'-h cost o? print paper. II TEN CENT LOAF Says It May be Possible to Get One for Eight Cents. WASHINGTON. Sept. 1. Prospects of an early and radical reduction in bread prices apparently vanished Friday night when Herbert Hoover, the food administrator, announced that the best the public may expect is a Di-ounce loaf for lu cents or possibly eight cents. The eight-cent loaf of 1; ounces is possible, Mr. Hoover said, only if bakers, retailers and consumers unite to eliminate wasteful distribution methods and cooperate to obtain a standardized loaf. The price of family flour, Mr. Hoover said, should be reduced at the present price of wheat at leart two or three dollars a barrel. Rakers' flour, however, will sell little cheaper than at present. C. I. Corby, who is serving for the bakers of the country as a voluntary aid to Mr. Hoover, said Friday night that a K.-ounce loaf for 10 cents would represent a slieht reduction in present prices. Standardization, he said, would be hard to bring about, since varying costs in ingredients that go into bread have made it necessary to increase or reduce the size of the loaf. No move will be made towards reduction, Mr. Corby said, until the food administration has announced its plans for dealing with the baking industry. It may be a month before the program is ready, it was learned tonight. "The bakers have been and are holding themselves in readiness. " said a statement by Mr. Corby, "to effect the conservation of wheat. They have been cooperating with Mr. Hoover and have supplied data and facts to assist the food administration in perfecting its plans relative to bread. "The bakers respectfully request the public to disregard the many ridiculous statements about bread emanating from unreliable sources and ask that they await the announcement of the president relative to the nation's plans for broad reduction." I have no lo;jl t that the government will have the same genuine support from them in their news and editorial columns in connection with the second issue. Raid .dxertiing a Problem. 'The question of paid advertising presents a serious problem for th government. The value o' such advertising cannot be doubted, and if the operation could be governed by the same considerations as those which determine the action of private enterprises, it would be much simplified. A private enterprise may advertise in a selected number i.f mediums that are useful .o lis purpose and may conti ol itn expenditures for that purpose without limitation except its own desires or ability to pay. If the Government engages in such a campaign it must advertise in every ne. -caper and periodical in America without discrimination. All should have cjual treatment and must hive equal ti eatment." opening of next Liberty loan camof Liwit. bunds will a !pi oxii.ia'e 5 .:,'0"1,,,-",,,"JU.
