By This We Stand PACIFISTS arc paciiits. anJ we are all pacifists, ultimately. The quek-n is, how can we best attain that peace, and attain it permanently ? it within the nature or the beast, responsible for the conflict, anJ entering upn it w'tth worLl-wTle ambition, to return t" the status quo anJ stay there without firt entertaining the complete tloin which the exigencies rf thrp-e ambitions invite? When the Unite,! States accepted this war, it was distinctly announced to the world that it was not to be a war ot invasion on our part, but that the time ha come when we amid no loirsrer tolerate the inult to our sovereignty, the internal interference. :he di-repect of our sea rights, and especially not, threatening conspiracies to wrest territory from us. It was not to be a war of invasion, therefore, but of defense, and as a defensive war, one in detense of the vital principles regarded by American ideals as e hernial to permanent peace. There was to be no quest of territory; n claims for indemnities, but a ti.riit for lasting peace, and as a means to that end it was declared, not only by the president, but confirmed by congress, that the "world must be made safe for democracy." Nothing could be plainer than that. The consequences, leading to that safety, means the overthrow of Prussian militarism, elimination from the concert of nations the (ierman autocracy, and, of course, with them, the "jir.ker" system by which, octopus-like, the German people are held as autocracy's slaves. Any proposal of peace, Come from where it will, that does not include, and make it Protocal No. t; the overthrow of the (ierman autocracy, and attendant menaces, and the making of a "world safe for democracy," challenges the sincerity and wisdom of the president of the United States, of the congress that is supportin:; him, and of those American ideals under which all America i "pled.ejm;- the lives, the fortunes, and the sacred honor" ot its puWe are not bein for peace any more. We are preparing to tiht for it. It was almost .akin to beini; for peace, underoin repeated insult, his backbone challenged and beim; tested, not only from our now war-time enemy, but from a considerable aggregation of Americans and near-Americans, that the president of the United States was undergoing a ear ago, and through him the American people. Millions of those same Americans, so anxious for war then, are not so anx-ioip-tor war now, it is true; we are at war with one of the mightiest powers on eanh not poor, decrepit, down-trodden, and both internally and externally loo: cd Mexico, for the blood ot which they were also thirsting, yet, despite the size of the contract, we are not to beg any more at least for a while. That is exactly what every peace proposal that has come up would amount to if utilized; this, from Henry Ford and his good ship Oscar, to Pope Benedict, head of the church of Rome a begging ot Germany for an avenue of escape from her wrath, precisely as the Germans in their colossal egotism would be sure to interpret it and without the least disposition to open the way. It is our answer k Rev. Fr. John Carroll, pastor of St. Joseph's church, whose letter appears elsewhere, in which he gives hi attitude toward our criticism of Pope Benedict's proposals. Rather than be further misunderstood, and to make ourselves plain, we apologize for what he calls our "flippancy" in transposing the official titles of Sen. Fa Follette and Pope Benedict, but the apology is to the form, please, rather than to the intent : this, too. expressed in all friendship, the kindliest ot feedings, and highest of reverence for the holy father in his spiritual capacity. The titles were transposed to convey the idea, which is correct, that the proposals of Sen. Fa Follette and of Pope Benedict, were in substance, identical, differing in language rather than context and that what was condemned in the one as traitorous the other could not sanctify. By that we stand. If the mode of expression was offensive, we apologize, l hi 1 not for the purpose of the expression. Rev. John Cavanaugh, president of Notre Dame, took us to task on this quesuon of war and peace once, something like two ears ago, when there was soire difference of opinion as to whether or not the United States should invade Mexico, and, "there are things greater in this world than peace," he said. "Better to die for a principle than to live for peace without honor." He wits right, but we disagreed on what in that instance was to constitute peace with honor just as we seem to disagree with the pope with reference to the expediency of dx'm for a principle now, and it is one of the great American privileges, in fact one, which through a larger democracy, America would like to extend to Germany, viz., the privilege to disagree. Neither are we alone in our disagreement with the holy father on the subject of the peace proposals, this, too, from outside the writer's Protestantism. Cohde 'Fallen, one of the co-editors of the American Catholic Encyclopedia, as quoted by the press, upholds our attitude on the point, and Cende 'Fallen is one of the brainiest and leading Catholics in America. "'I he holy father intercedes unwisely at this time," he is quoted as saim;. "The world is aflame. Here in America undercurrents of sedition, disloyaltv, even treason, keep coming to the surface. The pope, speaking as he must on his mere personal responsibility in matters temporal, should take care for the sake ot thousands of Catholics in America who may not distinguish between Iiis temporal and spiritual authority." He is quoted as saying much more, and the above, we anticipate, is a reporter's record, but the sense of it is good, and the reasoning excellentlv in keemi with Catholic distinctions. If the pope's authority as God's vicar diminishes in matters political, then he takes his place among men in such matters, and is subject to criticism, even by Catholics, the same as other men. This is going a trifle farther than suggested in Father Carroll's letter, but not without legitimate purpose. We are grateful to tne father, too, for opening the way to this explanation. The "Pulse" column of The News-Times is always open to differences of opinion. It helps clarify the atmosphere sometimes. e hope there may be no farther misunderstanding of our purpose, by which we stand, though, as before stated, because of the oilensiveness of the transposition of Pope Benedict's and Sen. Fa Follette's official titles, that phafe of it, and that alone, is apologetically withdrawn.
