DEFY RETAILERS Pay 25 Cents a Gallon or Do Without is Ultimatum of County Association. "Twenty-live cents a gallon, or no milk!" This is the ultimatum fired at the South Kend Milk Dealers' association Wednesday night as the result of a meeting of tin members; of the St. Joseph County Milk lroduceis' association, representing an output of 1,."00 gallon- of the product daily. Retailers who two weeks ago increased the price of milk to the consumers to 11 cents a quart, it is said, balked when the farmers, at a meeting Saturday night, raised the wholesale stipulation from L'J i in some cases M cents a gallon. They declared the price had been elevated because they made no profit on the L'l'-cent milk. Now, with the wholesale' pi ice i' .", cents it is probable that added contributions from the consumer will be required. Boo-t of Oilwr Market.-. The wholesalers assert it is useless for them to attempt to supply the local markets under cents a gallon, because there is no profit, and markets in Chicago and elsewheie are glad to handle any amount at '" to 1'T cents. Their main reason for the increased price, they say, is the high cost of feed since the war began. CONGRESSMAN WILL ADDRESS REUNION Congressman John 1 Miller will arrive from Washington, 1). C. THIEVES CLEAN OUT STOCK OF TAILOR SHOP (CONTINUED ritOM PACK ONE) until his return the exact extent of the loss and whether any insurance was carried could not be learned. Police authorities wired hint this morning to return at once, and he is expected this evening". According to AVercl Worek, who is employed by Mr. Spreng, and who discovered the robbery when he opened the place Thursday morning, two men came to him Wednesday afternoon asking to see the empty store, which is leased by Mr. Spreng. They said they wanted to rent it, but Worek had received orders to let no one in but water and gas meter men. He unlocked the door, however, and let them look inside for a moment. The front windows of the empty store had been soaped on the in.ide to a height of about eight feet when the former occupants moved out. and this prevented anyone on the street from seeing what was going on. The lath-and-plaster partition was cut through, and then through the hole the bolts of cloth were takan out and loaded into the waiting machine. Tliioes Knew the (routu!. That the work was done by someone who "knew the ground" seems certain, for the one point wh re there was no obstruction on the other side was chosen as the means of entrance. A pencil mark on the woodwork above marked the spot where the cut was made. Nothing but cloth wan taken, ns far as could be learned. A watch, and some little money, was found In one of the tabie drawers, which had not been touched bv the robbers. All the cloth shelves were perfectly cleaned, however. For a short time it was thought that an attempt had been made to open the safe, for a hole was drilled above the combination knob. It was learned that this hole had been put in by a repair man some time ago. and that nothing was taken from the yafe. Police authorities in Chic ago and Toledo have been notified, as it is probable that the goods will be disposed of in one of those cities.
