Commandeer! Mr. President! MISS JliANETIT; RANKIN, CiniressTuman Ironi Mnntana, et our compliment. Her speech in tlie houe yoterJay, expoini; the labor simaii'r, "-ii her state, speaks volume. It cniiiirm;. assuming that she speaks the tru!!i. exactly what we said some Jas ago. Much t thi I. W. W. talk that ve hear trmn the west is capitalistic lar.Jer. and the 1. V. W. is just wise enough to capitalize it as a demonstration of strength. .1 Im I). l(:m of Anaconda fame may he all right a a worker in the Red (in- movement. That he should he doing some good in the world :tiJe frorr. lining hi purse is commendable. He may need some Mich employmer.! to detract attention from Iiis self-enrichment activities out therein the wertern hill-. It becomes almot unpatriotic, if not nearoacrilege, to say anything derogatory of a man who practices philanthrophy, even though it he with hut one hand while he steals with the other. Congresswoman Rankin seem no repector of persons or of subterfuges. ' i- no defense of the i. V. Y. that Miss Rankin should take the Anaconda ' in.ignates" t task for their oppression of legitimate workingmen, and then -ee'Miig to brand them into submission with an "anarchistic"' brand. Better to rid the Red (o-s movement of such as Mr. Ryan, and send him out to Montana with Iiis great wealth, and organizing ability, there to operate his mino with justice to the miners, and mayhap, to the government as well. H r it appears that k is not all a question ot oppressing and blacklisting the vorkm-men. The government is being held up on the other hand, for the copper which the miners produce, and which is sorely needed in the war preparations of the present time. That Mr. Ryan should have led the movement ot the copper "magnates" to resist the price lixed by the council of defense, and l neu the political maneuver to have an industrial board substituted, in the apt'.1 rent hope that the latter might allow the ''war profits" to soar somewhat hig l(er. is a compliment to his sellish genius, perhaps, but it brings his real patriotism, and even his Red Cross plulantl.rophy, into question just the same. ( 'ongrevs-.. unian Rankin is right again. The answer is: Commandeer, Mr. President. Commandeer! The bill that she proposes, giving the president full power to that end and to remove all doubts as to the powers in that direction. thai he already has is distinctly to tiie point. Let the government take over the mines, while the war lasts, at least, and operate them. It will settle both the labor and the "war protits" question. Operate the mines with consciipied miners, if need be. The congresswoman has broached a real, practical s !::!:. n. It ould be line discipline for Mr. Ryan. He needs it. I hat would be merely his doing by compulsion what Mr. J. Ogden Armour !' Umour packing fame, lias volunteered to let the government do with his racking plant. "The United States government can have Armour & Co., .t can have J. Ouicn Armour," he said. "It can have any man and any g p of men. There will be no requests for exemptions." It seems too yo ai to be true, but it is an attbude, which, ir carried out, will assure the l'u:vd States, "overmnent never asking for Armour & Co. We need e .1. O. Jcn Armours and less John D. Ryans in this country ;i" . we nc-;.' lite Armours in business more than wc need the Ryans in the Red Cross. Co to Mivv Rankin. The whole country :barring the "war pi'ohiteciV i:, solid behind you.

Several months later, with Milling, he was ordered to Fort Jiiley, where the two young officers worked out a system of target location and tire d.servation with thf field artillery forces stationed there. It was while on this detail that Arnold first demonstrated his remarkable ability and his capability of maintaining his head in an emergency. While making a fliqht of 1.2 no feet ir. the air his motor went had ami with no inherent stability his machine started on a plunge for the earth. When within Do) feet of the sround and only a question of a few seconds interim between life and a horrible death, lie righted his tnachine and made a safe landing for both himself and the machine. Daring the sa no- year he startled the aeronautical world by his remarkable work when he captured the Mat kay trophy when it was first offered for i connaisance work. In 1 ! 1 1 at hi' own reque-t.
