Austro-Germans In Swift Attack Take 1,300 Russ
Aside from the Russian theater the hostilities cn all the fronts are virtually at a standstill. Bombardments at some points attaining fairly violent proportions, and at i various places the operations have not taken on the aspect of a contemplated resumption of the bis alii-d drive which the bad weather of last week hrought to an uhrupt end. The Canadians operating against I ns have again made thrusts of a successful nature into the environs of the already encompassed coal center. which apparently cannot Ions withstand capitulation. By the use of curtain fires the Hermans are endeavoring to keep hack further encroachments into their terrain here, but even with this fire against them the intrepid Canadians continue? almost daily to extend their saps and now are firmly ensconced on the south and west outskirts of the town. Crown Irine Hammers Away. The aspirations of the German crown prince to win territory auainst Hen. Petain's forces on the southern front in France have not as yet he-en achieved. Tn the Champaign reuion the French have penetrated Herman lines at three places and on the famous Avocourt wood hill 00 sector of the Verdun front have put down with a loss a Herman attempt at an attacks Having been enabled, mainly through the disaffection in the Russian army, to drive the Russians out of the greater part of Halicia and Bukowina, the Austro-C.ermans now have be-jun in southern Moldavia a maneuver, the success of which would he of vast importance against the Russo-Roumanian line, barring the way to Bessarabia. At I'okshanl the enemy has struck a swift blow at the defendets of the line and forced them across the river Tyrladesus. therehy controlling the crossing of the lower Sereth and the road to Halatz, one of the chief Roumanian towns on the Danube Ktill remaining in Roumanian hands. A number of guns of various calibers and lf.100 prisoners were taken hy the invaders. To the north, along the Bystritza river in Roumania. two Russian regiments turned traitor and ild. compelling the main force of the Russians here to retire again several miles. Near Kimpolung. in southern Bukowina, th Russians gave hattle on the heights of Molit, hut were defeated and forced to cede territory. At several points further north the Russians are at grips with the enemy, and apparently are mm- than holding their own, on several sectors, having driven back the Teutonic advance posts. Taking advantage of the retreat of the Russians west of the Zbrocz river, where the disaffection In Hen. P.rusilloff's army made it virtually a rout, the Austrians and Hermans are harvesting hastily the crops left behind.
