AiiffUHt I .ffwpi, Ronaparto ami .lulle Clary; John (hin aixl Id. Itn Van Iturpfi. The two mot important weddings for August J, are thr.se of .John Calvin, the celebrated Protestant r-.

Napoleon. Perhaps no ii,er, jn history present greater differences of character and attainments. Ronaparte was famous largely because he was the emporer's brother, and all his life long he, as well as his wife, lived in constant fear of that great man. Calvin, of course, although his father designed him for a theological career, gained his ow n place; in the world and felt little fear for anybody. Calvin was born in I 9. at Picardy. in France and when he wa F vears old he ernhraced the reformation. Shortly thereafter he The Housewife's By rmnoti Till; MXOM) Iii:ss)N. Fvery housewife has heard so much about the importance of food econoi.iy lately that she can tell you in her sleep that the greatest lesson of the war so far as women are concerned, lies in thrift. It is as if the housewife, standing tischt in her own kitchen supposedly in blissful se- - ! elusion were fo-ussed by an enor minis limelight and. whether she would or not. all her little foibles and all her big; extravagances were revealed to the searching gaze of everybody from the president down to her next-door neighbor. Why, city officials are even having our garbage cans inspected so they will know to a fi action Just how rlosely we peel our potatoes. Hut there is another terrifically important thing that w e hav e found out, and we will find out even more vividly if the war goes on. and that Is that if we want to be very helpful and if up want to hae our rinKer in the pie of victory, we have got to be phjsically fit. We always thought of our American young men as being about as nearly phsically perfect as younff men could be in this world of human frailties. And then came back the . report from the enlisting officers that i told us uuite frankly that our stal- ' wart young ?ons and brothers and husbands actually had corns and callouses, that they couldn't work an hour in the trenches without keeling I over, and that they " ere so finical about their food that it took somej times weeks befo; e thev became acthe sfldiers. All meetings will be devoted to Hed Fross work hereafter. The club will give a picnic at Michigan City. August 1. Music and refreshments were enjoyed during the social hour. The club ,vil! hold a special meeting next Tuesday eveni ing at the Nurses home, when the i time of the next regular meeting will be decided. The purpose of ' the special meeting is to make packages for the soldiers in Texas. i ' Sixty couples attended the dinner and dance given at the Fountry club last evening. Women as well as men have been KettinK down to brass tacks and hard facts. Comforts are on the decrease and as always happens when that is the case, we find to our sorrowthat we ate not as husky and as hardy as we thought ourselves. Society women who are learning to drive ambulances, college k'irls: who spend their vacations farming It, business girls who ar taking men's jobs, are washing that they had been trained more like the Spartan girU of old. and that gvmnastics had had a larger place in their childhood curriculum. So quite suddenly n new ideal of femininity has come into existence. It is rather more smart now to bi able to wear a "service hoot' from 7 a. m. to t p. m. without a whimper than to he able to dance divinely in a fairy slipper. The girl w ho looks i her best in khaki is more favored now than the uirl who is a dream in Pastelles and It takes as much good looks for one as the other. We won't hear so much about this second lesson this les.-on of making ourselves physically tit for personal hardships because most womfln are too good sports to whimper. Those who know say that women stand physical discomfort even better than men. And there is no doubt about the fact that women at training camps of all sorts this summer are. showing n degree of pluck and adaptability that would be worthy of the best sort of soldiers.
