(OniinueJ from Pace One)' this important branch, and one of the most important branches, of the national war service; the humanitarian branch. Lat ni.cht he x.is still 522.000 short to speak of it in round numbers; had that much of a deficit, S4S.000 marking the latest of St. Joseph county's response. TODAY and TOMORROW end the campaign here. Stud; the present status in comparison with other cities of the state: Evansville reports 5()S,ooo tor Vandenburg county, including Hvansville; Terre Haute makes a similar report of S3 S, 000 on its 570.000 allotment; Gary, not generally regarded as in the Suth Bend-Fort Wayne-Terre Haute-Evansville class, was put down on the national budget, along with Lake county, for Slno.ooo, nJ s alone ready with more than South Bend has subscribed by Slo,ono. Fort Wayne has 570.000 of Allen cornty's SSo.noo provided for. Anderson we like to turn m our noses, sometimes, at ''small town stun" reports that Madien county has more than doubled its allotment of 525.000', having subscribed 553,500. But South Bend is still pleading, the original anticipations that the rich and the near-rich, would rush in and cover the amount wanted, -seeming to have at least partially failed. Of these rich, one has broken in with 55, 000. three 52,5oo, one with 52,000, ten with 51.000, nineteen with 55oo and so on until 16 had contributed an average of 53 2 7 each, r thereabouts, and none of them less than 525. Scores have Mibscribed from 520 down to ten cents, making up about 52.000 the 547,500 total. It is no complaint against those who have subscribed; either the 166 rich or near-rich, or others less well-to-do. But think of the other scores who have done nothing! On the assessment rolls of this city are the names of 400 residents call them "the 400" who have valuations standing against them all the way from 520, 000 up to in the millions. In the scale of local valuations, it means that none of them are worth less than S60ooo, and some of them as high as 56,000,000. There is no estimating what a catastrophe, a cyclone, a flood, a conflagration, an earthquake, a German Zeppelin might mean to them; might mean to their property, say nothing of their hides. If they don't care for the hides of those boys who are going away to head off the Zeppelins, they ought to care something for 'Mr own property, at least. Think, men! Be selfish about it if you like. Better do all that you can to make good soldiers of those boys; show them that you are for them or they may lose heart, leaving the Zeppelins to come over and make vou their slaves. Come out of that dream, before it becomes worse than a night-mare. Understand that this country, and its people, and the men who are going to war, owe you just one hundred millionth part of what you owe them until you have done your full share, and you can't settle it all at the tax-collector's window either. Unload that heart of stone, Mr. Citizen. Be a human an American human. You are the cheapest kind of a cheapskate if you don't cooperate. Unless the United States, with her allies, win this war, ar.d win it on the other side of the brine, your property won?t be worth a whoop, your liberty and opportunities spoiled, and you'll get exactly what you deserve a job at paying Germany's war debts with your brawn. Even the kaiser will hate you for your dogged pinching of your coins, and they'll be the very first that he'll want. Better whack-up by mailing a respectable check, or calling with the coin at the headquarters of the Red Cross chapter. Chamber of Commerce, and help make a record that will prove that you're worthy of the American citizenship which you profess.
