FLINT, Mich.. June If. Several thousand ro-idcr.t- of Flint, refae-i-entine; many pmft.-sion and classes of society. l;rie launched a movement to hae the city construct an athletic stadium and military drill li Id. It has been informally decided to have the voters of Flint pass upon the question of a bond issue, at a special election next month. The state has appropriated S(Of'O as its share of the cxpens- for an armory at Flint. The local plan is to incorporate the state appropriation in the fund raised hy a hond issue, if the latter is approved. Th p-oposed site for the armory is on a bluff overlooking the held which tentatively lias been selected for the stadium. The state"? appropriation is for an armory sulhciently lar'e to accommodate thret companies of the national guard. So certain are local citizens that the hond i.-sue will he approved, they recently held a public "stadium celebration at which pronnd was broken for the municipal plant. riundred of persons. including millionaire manufacturers, assisted In the work of clearing debris from the site, which has been a commun
ity dumping ground and eravel pit. The amount of money to he raised by the proposed bond is-.-ue has not been determined. It ina.-t Le i?ut?ciently larpe to inch; Je purchase of the property, ere. tin r of a. stadium to seat lO.CO'j p-iu: and construction of athletic Heids within the amphitheater, as wtll as t' assist the t-tate in huibiin' the armory. The project sill re'juire s.- eral hundred thousand dollars. Pians for the athletic grounds provide for a ha-ehall diamond, football Kridiron. an.l a qartc-r mile running; track. It is hopod to connect the amphitheater with Atweod island by a rustic 1 ridu-e. A five-acre tract on the island is hein developed intj a municipal park and rdayrend. liocal business men advance many reasons for their pioject. In addition to their desir. to assi.-t the state and federal f.rowniment in their preparedness measures, it has been pointed out that the municipal held would be on-- method of oiflcially recoKnizini; the growth of thf city. A ilecade aiai, Flint was a small town. It has Imi, since passed the ."f. min mark in population and its growth seemingly has not diminished. This, it is said, caused wealthy residents to plan an adequate recreation project. The war brought unprecedented prosperity to Flint. Many persons, living on modest incomes a fewyears afco. invested their ravings in certain manufacturing concerns which have yielded immense dividends.
