WASHINGTON. Feb. IS. Fewer men lo.st tlieir lives in American coal mines during lflti than in any year of tlie last 10. although the ear as t he most prosperous in the history of mininc. sith more men tniiloyed and a tri eater lonn'e taken from the earth than ever hetort. The army of mine workers numbered ovt-r three-iuarters of a milion. Three and three-tenths' of each thousand were killed by accident, th lowest death rate in 18 years, and the lowe.-t on record per ton of cal mined. The number killed was 2,2 2 which is 4 4 less than In 1K1 j. 22$ Ies than in 1014 and SCO :-s.s than in 1 r 1 : . There were 5,0t(,ö00 more tors f coal mined than in 191.". "The mere redaction of 4 4 lives lost for the year 191b does not disclose by any means the ;ratif yin? results obtained." says a statement Sunday by Van H. Manning, director of the bureau of minc-s. "If the same conditions had prevailed in 1916 "is in 1915 in retard to the tonnage for each life lost, there would hae been at leaft 275 more men killed. "Th safety first movenifcat loiter

ed by the bureau of mines from an isolated, sporadic effort until it has become a prreat national asset, is responsible for the st opplnr and turning back of a record of deaths that had become a great American rim. It is venturesome to siu''et' what mlRht have happened without the safety first movement but I believe I am conservative in savins that a: lea-t 5,000 miners are toda- nine and happy with their families who otherwise would have been in their graves. "'What has ben so far accomplished is due to the friendly Cooperative spirit that exists betweej, the state mine inspectors, the mine cperators, the miners and the bureau of mines."
