They hay that the late Madame Thebes of Paris possessed many secrets. It is prtty hard to believe that. She lived 72 years and no woman can live so Ion? on a diet of secrets. Th- tinkr with his tinking kit is going gaily down the street he hopes to earn a little bit with which to buy him grub to eat; the millionaire with his huge car is hiking swiftly to the town, in hopes to earn him a ciuar and dinner ere the sun ioes down; the poet hits his harp a swipe and tears off a soft note and sweet, he's thinking of a yard of tripe and of a carrot and a beet; the sweet girl looks up at the man and hopes to set Iiis pulse astir; she s thinking of beans by the can, he looks like home, sweet home, to her. The man looks at and thinks her fair, and sends around a box of sweets, he's thinking of a home-nook where there will be smiles and hom?-made rats. So from before old Adam's time, in cities and in solitude, in every age and every rlime, men's thoughts were mostly turned to foods. Our ancestors went di: Ting clams, because they made a toothsome dish, and in the streams constructed flams on Fr'days, to corral some lish: our fathers with a hone-head spear chased the huge tigers to their e'en, and then, as soon as they were '.ear. the tigers chased them back aL-ain. Our uncles chased the saurian with vim, aad ere our unc could wheel the saurian fell on the man and smiled to lind him quite a meal. So every age, by field and blood, on mountain height and wooded place, man has laid snares, dug in the mud, and searched the streams, to feed his face. Today man corners eggs and sich, and sends spuds soaring out of sight, he lays his plans and waxes rich upon his brother's appetite. If man Just did not have to eat. and chase the food thing quite so stronpr. then wouldn't this old world be sweet, and wouldn't life be just a song? Hecauso a man lielouss to this or that lodge is no reason why lie should be chosen to till a municipal position over the head of the fellow better qualified. perhaps, who is outside the pale of this or that order. Soems to us there's too murh of this sort of thinK rampant in Mishawaka at the present time, and isn't confined to one lodge hy any means. Iet's away from it!

On Democratic Ticket Christoph Is iMon-Commital Others for Clerkship. A deputation of democrats waited on James Hennessey at his otlice yesterday and presented him with a petition to sign placing him in the running for the mayoralty on the democratic ticket at the March primaries. Mr. Hennessey talked the matter over with the deputation and subsequently signed the petition which '.viP, be file 1 with the proper authorities later on. Since The News-Times started the political campaign a week ago. and the election of olficers to conduct the campaign, friends of the various candidates have busied themselves in behalf of their favorites who aspire to civic honors. Democratic friends of Frank Christoph have approached that gentleman and have asked him to come forward as a candidate for the mayoralty, but when questioned Mr. ''hristoph was non-committal. The names of Frank Kicket of the fourth wan! and Frank I -en hard of the third ward are mentioned in connection with the city clerkship on the democratic ticket. In the meantime the republicans are laying low, evidently waiting their time before making any announcement. So far, the names of Mayor (laylor and Judge Feig are the only ones mentioned in republican circles a:- likely candidates for the mayoralty.

The much-scoffed-at Mishawaka high school basketball tive redeemed itself Friday night when they trounced the much-touted Concordia college quintet in the old Methodist church by the score of 9 to 1.3. The team work of the locals was the feature of the game. Hunt went well and seemed to he the life of the team. Concordia waa somewhat hampered hy the high school playing rules, and several fouls were ca'led on them, hut were accepted with good grace. Capt. (.Jremel, though small in stature, was the star of the downstaters, and it required the utmost vigilance cn the part of the high guards to keep lnm from scoring repeatedly. Poles seemed to have "found himself in this game but was put out in the tlrst of the second half. Two of the substitutes had their chance to show what they could do and acquitted themselves well, throve, at forward, though in only a short time, succeeded in netting three baskets. Pahueki went in at guard when Hoper was taken out with a bleeding nose and played good ball. A curtain raiser between the high seconds and the Hermans of South Ilend was called off on account of roughness on both sides. Coach Semler's warriors will journey to Rochester next week. Practices this week will be hard and "long in preparation for this game. Rochester swamped East Chicago by a large score. Mishawaka (39) Concordia Boles Baur Right Forward. Miller (Capt.)
