Irving Derlin's "syncopated musical show in three acts." was presented before two capacity audiences at the Oliver New Year's afternoon and evening. "Them as likes" their runtime with bobbing shoulders and snapping tinkers sot their till at these performances. The play makes no pretension to be anything hut a melange of syncopation, and that it is beyond a doubt. There is not one of the musical numbers that does not bear a trace of the "swing" of "Alexander's KaKtime Hand." the piece that $ent lierlin on the road to fame as the Kiii Syncopator of them all. Dancing is the bis feature of "Watch Your Step." the leading

exponents on the modern terpsichor-

ean intricacies in the cast bein,?

Hannah Keach and Olin Hovvland, who till the parts originally played

bv Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Castle. .

Miss Leach and her partner scor- '

ed the hit of the performances, ex-' editing a great many modern '

whiilwind" dances and drawing en

thusiastic applause with their pre- ,

mentation or the schottische or an

older day.

William Cameron tried his level

best to be funny in a "ruhe" sport J role hut his efforts all appeared to j he strained, he was clearly not at

home in the part. Harry lJestry in

the role of the matinee idol did sev

eral song numbers and one difficult dance in satisfying fashion. Playing opposite him. Hazel Doyne, pleased

with several songs. Voices were

scarce, the male chorus being fair

and the feminine songsters scarcely

that. It may he admitted, however.

that Berlin's music is not particularly adapted to the revelation of any vocal accomplishments. Arthur Sherman, introduced to give the opera tone in the second act. is the one exception to this, and his presentation with the chorus of the syncopated version of the great Kistfoletto quartet was vocally satisfying. Goff Phillips presents some amusincr chatter in blackface and succeeds very well in holdinc: the attention alone for some time.
