Toyne Ordered to Prepare Estimate For Station Near Dam. It is costing the city more than four times as much to pump a gallon of water at the nrrth side station than it does at the central station, according to the monthly report of the water works department for No ember. For the 7J. ::.". 'KMi gallons of water pumped by the central station the pumpage charge, which does not include the fixed charges of operation and overhead, was $C.O046C per gallon while the charge at the north side station was $0.20t. This is the practical difference between the pumping of water ay steam and by water power. It is the aim of th? department to pump as much of the necessary j demand for water through the central station but the excess must he taken tare of by tho steam station. Though the rated capacity of the central station is .",0(0,000 gallons per day, conditions o' the races leading to and from the turbines are such that it is impossible to pump more than aboit half of the capacity. J. W. Toyne. of the' w ater works department has been ordered by the" water works board to prepare estimates or the construction of a new plant on the island at the dam, where it will be possible to run the three turbines at full capacity. Should the new plant be constructed here it will be possible to construct races of sufficient capacity to handle all of the water needed, except perhaps in the .summer month, by the city. It has been estimated that n plant such as is contemplated by the department will cost approximate' $:!', coo complete. These figures arc, of course, not accurate but the eharges could not be more than ?F00e. The present race from the three turbines is abcut half large enough to take care of the flow from a single one. SPANISH SHIP IS SUNK Hundred Persons Iteiortoel to Have Rccn Drowned.
