Governor Ralston Issues Thanksgiving Proclamation
INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 2 4. Gov. ILalston Thursday Issued the following Thanksgiving proclamation: "The demand for labor and the product thereof has l?en unprecendented In Indiana during the past year. Wapres have been high and so have prices of the surplas of the factory, mine and field fo high in truth that the problem of family support in some homes has become a most serious question. Dut while the solution of this problem is still pressing and conditions are far from ideal, yet our people are patient and hopeful and comparatively happy, because prosperity has blessed our state generally and peace has abounded throughout our nation, spreading greater good will among all the people. "Other nations are at war with cne another, and some have their cwn internal discord and strife; but with our beloved country it is different. We are at peace with the world and free from internal bitterness. We have our differences of course, as a free and thinking peo
ple, but we are composing them and .
reconciling ourselves by rational methods without resorting to the law of the strong hand. For a con-

"The desire amonj; the peorle for risht living' ia more militant than it was a year aco, and our civilization is on a higher plane. The forces making for good citizenship have been alert and aggressive, and the forces of evil have been put on the defensive In the open. All this means that a broader spirit and a more fraternal feeling permeates the social atmosphere. The security and perpetuity of our state and nation depend upon the growth and maintenance of this cordial cooperation: to the end that the passing of the years will strengthen our foundation and promote the happiness of all our people. "Now, therefore, I, Samuel M. Ttalston, governor of Indiana, in obedience to law and in conformity with a worthy custom, do hereby designate and proclaim Thursday, November "0, 1916, a Thanksgiving day, and I urge its observance by the people of the state in such a manner as will be in keeping with the spirit and significance of the day."

looking not unlike an orange tree. The leaves are a glossy green, the flowers small and yellowish and the berries a purple black. The varieties having- a small leaf of deep green shade are said to make the finest tea. The native gatherers usually go into the forests in small groups under the leadership of an overseer, who is generally an expert in the work of gathering and preparing the yerba leaves and at the same time knows haw to manage his men to advantage. Having selected a place where the trees are abundant a camp is pitched. The leaves must be gathered at early maturity and when the weather is dry, so the time of the harvest is ordinarily about the beginning of May. Temporary sheds are first erected, the; covering being the broad leaves of the banana tree. The branches and leaves of the tree are gathered in large quantities and at the end of each day's work carried to camp to undergo the process of curing and pulverizing. The tea is then put in hide sacks of about 200 pounds each and is ready for shipment. Yerba mate has always been the drink and pledge of hospitality ajnong the South Americans. Among the Indians it was and is the custom when the stranger entered a camp or communal hut to prepare forthwith a gourd of yerba mate. The beverage being ready, the chief or head man takes the first sip and then passes the gourd to the visitors. The gourd is passed from one to another until all have partaken. Yerba mate loses none of its virtues when made in a teapot and served in the same manner as tea. Foreigners in South America generally prepare the drink by heating th TV n tpr n rl H i n f thtt matp In

in cold water when the boiling has progressed long enough and finally serving in cups, with sugar if desired. The inveterate mate drinker, however, takes his "straight." The Rev. John H. Zahm, who accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on his South American tour, endorses yerba mate in highest terms and expresses surprise that it has not found its way into the United States. He says: "It has all the virtues of tea and coffee and none of their deleterious qualities. For persons of weak and delicate constitutions it is the most invigorating beverage imaginable and leaves no disagreeable after effects. For use In hospitals it is invaluable. As a temperance drink it is nonpareil. It has preserved a large part of South America from the debasing evils of alcoholism, and I can conceive of no more powerful aid to the cause of temperance in our country than thj popularizing of a beverage, that has proved so efficacious among mi?lions of people in our sister continent."
