"The Spirit of the Founders" was the title of the sermon of Very Kev. John Cavanaugh, president at Notre Dame, Friday when Columbus day and Founders day were jointly celebrated. Fr. Cavanaugh' took his ioxt from St. Matthew. "Going therefore and teach all nations." Dr. Cavanaugh said in part: "Theologians say there are four marks or characteristics of the true church. It is one, that is to say, it is made up of all the faithful baptized with the name baptism, believing the same truths, receiving the Käme sacraments, observing the same law. It is holy in its founder, its doctrines, its discipline and its operations in the souls of men. It is Catholic, that is to say it is as wide as the world and as broad as humanity. It is apostolic in that it is the church the apostles themselves disseminated over the world and it ia governed by the successors of the apostles. "Hut there is another characteristic of the church as distinct and almost as universal in time and place as any of these. No other institution ever inspired at the same time such intense hatred and such heroic love. The persecution of the church began with the massacre of the holy innocents for the sake of the new born Christ and It has continued until the present day, but the church has risen above all its persecutions, and had developed the missionary spirit, more than any other organization on earth. "France long held noble preeminence in missionary work and it was from France that 73 years ago came Father Kdward Srin and six brothers. Vincent. Joachim, Lawrence. Francis Navier, Oatien and Auselim. They were among the earliest members of the little Con gregation of the Holy Cross, founded In Le Mans early In the last century". At the call of the missionary bishop from America these courageous spirits turned their faces to the setting sun and ventured into what was then the wilderness of Indiana. Settling at first near the frontier town cf Vincennes, they soon moved to what is now Xotre Dame, a spot beavtiful by grace of nature, and hallowed by the labors and virtues of the older missionaries. "It is well that faculty and students should understand and accept the sacrifices these missionaries made. If our work here is not a missionary work our lives are vain. If the students of the Notre Dame are not more religious men, more virtuous men. more true to th sacred loyalties of life and home and faith than the students of other schools than the dream of Sorin and the brothers was an illusion, their sacrifices were folly, their aspirations a barren hope. "A great function of this university, then, is to perpetuate among all its members the faith of the founders, to enkindle in its students the zeal which made the early days great and heroic, to move and act within that marvelous spirit of charity which drove Sorin and the brothers into the unknown wilderness and wherever the linger of destiny beckoned manifested the loyality to faith and duty which made the lives of the founders, beautiful, strengthening, and inspiring. "The founders were true patriots and this university is irrevocably American by virtue of tne spirit of the founders. "The spirit of the founders was al.o a spirit of service to God. They rendered to God the double tribute of worship and innocence. They made the forest ring with prayer and chant, and in their little lo chapel the consecrated host and the empurpled chalice were lifted with worship as glorious as any that ever lent glamour to a great cathedral. "In this year of glorious jubilee let us register a sacrvd vow that this shall never change or that spirit be lost or diminished. Iet the faculty and students of today emulate the men of old. the men of gold, who spent their days in labor and in innocence, who guarded the gate of their souls as the angels guarded the gates of Paradise wi;h a naming sword. "And tinally the spirit cf the founders was a spirit of large and beneßeient service to humanity. The areams of Sorin and the brothers have come true through tho grace of God and their own great endeavors, but their chiefest tlory and

BUTCH" M'DEVITT TO RUN FOR PRESIDENCY
!C V .... av -, ;S ; ; .; : : . :- ', v. . .: NEW YORK. Oct. 12. "Butch" McDevitt is going to run for tho presidency. The man who made himself famous as the "millionaire for a. day" by coming to New York in a special train from Wilkesbarre, Pa., and spending the w hole of an inheritance ot several thousand dollars which was left hin, within a few days, is due to arrive in this city today by special train. A hundred members of the McDevitt party, will come on the train with their hero and nominate him for the presidency of the United States. McDevitt took a life sized statue of himself to Washington by special train in 1914. A short sighted congress refused it room in the hall of fame in the capitol and it now graces the McDevitt back yard In Wilkesbarre. their completest triumph was their absolute dedication to the service of humanity. This ideal must never be permitted to die out of the he-art of faculty and students, l'y virtu; of that missionary spirit which always accompanies true faith, by virtue of that holy patriotism which religion itself sanctifies, by virtue of that service to God and to humanity which we owe both as Christians and as the children of the founders let us prepare to discharge to the world a duty of leadership and of service." In closing Father Cavanaugh made particular mention of the great men who have passed away with the past year whose lives were true Christian lives. The men he named were Archbishop Spalding, Thomas Mulry, Timothy K. "Howard, of South Ilend, Dr. Charles Herberman, Richard C. Kerens, all Laetara medalists, and Dr. Jörn R. Murphy. ID HOI STATE Declares Hughes Has Made Disastrous CampaignFlays Opponents. KVANSVILLF, Ind.. Oct. 14. Thousands of Indianans greet d their former republican governor, J. Frank Hanly, when he came back home today, on his prohibition presidential campaign train. Hanly in lighting mood, by Haying his former co-workers and the dem-rats alike and telling his audiences bluntly that he had no illusions about his role of John the Baptist, "a voice t rying out in the wilderness", moved them to enthusiastic applause. He visited four cities. Trinceton, Huntington. Iloonville. and Evansville in Indiana anil several Illinois towns before crossing the state line. "I am keenly conscious," he said, at Princeton, "that in this campaign there will be neither commission of authority nor emolument of office for me. I am but a John the Paptist, a voice crying out in the wilderness, pack yonder, somewhere in the fullness of God's providence is being disciplined and developed and raised a man whoso privilege it will be to take this banner and in the no distant future bear it to luminous victory." Poonville, the home of former Fnited States Sen. Hemingway, gave Hanly one of the largest receptions that he has had during the campaign. Hemingway's recent statement that "the west was afire with Hughes sentiment" was questioned by Hanly in various cities. "Never in all my life." he said at Huntingburg. "hae I known a campaign to be so disastrous to a candidate as that which Mr. Hughes made in the near west." Standing bare headed tonipht above the grave of Nancy Hanks, Lincoln, in a grove outside Lincoln City. Ind., with oi.jy the stars giving light, and a few villagers and members of his party gathered about. Hanly declared his purpose to devote his life to lighting drink if need be. He spoke of Lincoln's hatred of liquor and declared that if he had lived it would have fallen at his hands. ! I'OIUI CAH STOLF.V.
