Hllis Shookman. cashier of the Iiurrows, (Ind.) bank, who Thursday confessed a shortage of J IS, 000 will throw himself on the mercy of the court when arraigned, according to bis father, Onrgo Shookman, who had a loni: conference with his son a.t the city prison Friday. The father, who is a farmer living near Decatur. Ind., was broken hearted when he learned of his son's predicament and declared that be would try to obtain bond for the your.?: man's release. After the conference at the jail, the elder Shookman said, "I always told my boy to be careful about handling ither people's money. Fills did not spend any of the money on himself. He told me that. He made a mistake when he advanced too much money." Arthur Cm, en. head of the state bank department, in speakin.tr of the case said "Since I have .cone further into the books 1 am inclined to think that most of it went into overdrafts. I think better of h-m than at first. Shookman was an expert with his accounts and it appears that he kept the overdrafts carefully concealed until as he says, they could be made up again.

. Mrs. Pernelia Hutchins, 74 years old, died Friday morninp at her home near Kcrtrand from cerebral hemorrhage. She is survived by several children, one of whom is Mrs. Rofe Vanvort with whom she icsidcd. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon under the auspices o' the Christian Science church of South I.end. Saturday the body will be shipped to Fennville, Mich., for burial.

Iyco Frye. a local painter, while at work on a house on Twelfth St., tell from the scaffold and is believed to have suffered internal injuries of a serious nature. The scaffold was supported by two ladders and the runs; on the ladder broke letting the scaffold down. Frye fell to the ground a distance of 20 feet and was rendered unconscious.

Thursday placed a wreath at the entrance to her husband's tomb in Concordia cemetery. She departed for Cuba Friday, according to her attorneys. The case of the People vs. Chas. Dudley, who is charged with assault with intent to kill, upon T. W. Heady of this city, will be heard in the circuit court next Monday.

The cases of Guy and C. William Webber charged with assaulting1 Amos Stewart while the latter was sirvinK as a special police has occupied the attention of local justice court for three days. On the tirst day a jury' was empanelled. This jury acquitted William Webber but disagreed in the case of his brother, Guy. The latter case was set i'or retrial Thursday but only four acceptable jury men were secured. Friday the required number were secured and the case is a pain in pro'-rress.

Elkhart County Crowds Don't Like Talks About "Extravagance," Etc.

Because Jim Goodrich, republican candidate for governor, insisted upon beins; shaved after a late arrival in the city Friday morning the start of a tour of the county was delayed for nearly two hours. Thirty-one of a scheduled caravan of fifty automobiles finally left Elkhart at ten o'clock. Goodrich and Andrew J. Hickey, candidate for congress, snoke in eiht different towns over the county during the day. The caravan passed through Klkhart at 8 o'clock enroute to Goshen, where a republican rally was held Friday niht. Nappanee and Wakarusa were the only towns that "warmed up" to the party which otherwise met with a chilly reception. In these two towns brass bands had been employed to "stir up" enthusiasm but there was little doln?. When Goodrich beran to talk Sibout democratic extravagance n conducting the affairs of the state, and Hickey started to tell about "a peace without honor," the audience he-ran to disperse and both men had to resort, to the "strategy of the joke book" in crder to have someone to talk to. A number of civil war veterans, who were taken alone: just for a show thanked the committee in charge for the ride upon their arrival here. "Put how did you like the speeches?" was the eiuery of one of the committeemen, to which a number of edd vets responded. "Speeches? Why who spoke?" The committeemen tied.

Royal Passctt and Hiram Hanske, two Klkhart younjr men, are to appear in the city court Saturday to answer charges of assault with intent to commit felony, preferred by two pirls from Nappanee who say the men took them into the country in Fas-sett's car. after asking If they micht take them "home," and attempted to assault them. The pirls ran away from the youns men west of the city, hid in a farm yard until they drove away, and then were brought to town by a man and woman who came along in a Ford, according to their story.

The state public service commission probably will accept within a week the '.ö-cent gas rate which was agreed upon by the gas company and the city, and which was submitted to the state ceunmission for ratification yesterday by Major F. E. Smith and City Atty. L. D. Hall, with a legal representative of the p;ns, company, from (J rand Rapids.

The second game of the series between the Elkhart Plue Sox and the Goshen Greys will be played at the Rogers' band park in Goshen next Sunday afternoon, starting promptly at 2: SO o'clock. Elkhart won the first game by the score of 11 to T. last Sunday. If Goshen succeeds in winning next Su.iday the scene of the third contest v,-ill be dc cided by the flip of coin.

The Concord township concrete highway, forming the All-West-S'de Goshen rd., will be connected with the Elkhart township brick part of the road within a week, according to advices from Goshen. Contractor A. M. Somith is said to have given assurances that the concrete road will in that time be completed to the Kunderei farm, where the brick road joins. That, part of the Concord township road which lies west of the first railroad crossing west of Dunlaps will not be laid until next spring.

The Congregational church which, since the middle of the summer, has been undergoing repairs, will be reopened for public worship next Sunday.

The hich school varsity football team perspired through twenty minutes' hard practice with the second team at the driving park piling up between six and eight touchdowns. The high school team is expecting a hard game with Warsaw Saturday.
