Luther Cass, one of the city's oldest and richest residents, passed away Monday morning at 4 o'clock. IIo had been ailing for the past six years. Death was caused by senile. Mr. Cass wa.s born June L'C, 181 in Stanstead, Quebec province, Canada, beintr SO years old at the time of his death. Finishing school in Canada at the ago of 17, he entered a bank as a clerk and worked for 10 years. Then he started a mercantile establishment. In 1SS1 he sold out and came to Mishawaka, where with hi.s brother-in-law, J. W. Hutchinson, he bought the A. Cass drug store. which was at that time owned by his father-in-law. He was formerly a director of the First National and First Trust and Savings bank for i:i years. At one time he owned contsiderable property in Mishawaka. but at the present time, according to Mr. Hutchinson, most of his wealth is In bank stocks. He was always known a.s an honest and honorable man. He has not been active in business affairs for over six years. On Oct. S. IST:1., he was married to Miss Nancy Cass, a third cousin, who survives. He also leaves a brother, J. Wclley C.iss-. Ayers Cliff. Province of Quebec, and a sister, Marina F. Leavitt, Ashland. .Mass. His parents have been dead for many years. James Conzens. multimillionaire, and former associate in business of Henry Ford and now police comrr issioner of Detroit at a yearly jsalary of $5.000, is not clear in hi.s own rrind whether the Sur.Oay saloon and the all-ciht saloon constitute a crime. "In the matter of morals, there can be no compromise," he declared today. "Crime must he stamped out." Couzens, who broke with Ford over the preparedness issue after Ford had declared against it, succeeds John Gillispie, who resigned as police commissioner.
