FORMST II ILL, N. V.. Aug. ::o. The lirs-1 national turf tennis championship of 1 1 1 was won on the courts of the West Side club Tuesday when William M. Johnston and Clarence J. Grittin of San Francisco successfully defended their doubles title against Maurice F. McDoughlin and Ward Dawson of Los Angeles in v four set match ti-4, !-::, " -7 , ti-:.. The winners wrested doubles honors from McLoughlin and Bundy on the same turf a year ago. McLoughlin. paired up with Dawson, hoped to regain the crown but the team work of Johnston and Grillin was too much for the newly formed pair. Except for the third set in which McLoughlin Hashed in his old time form, the outcome was never in doubt. The sympathies of the gallery were clearly with the famous internationalist and his youthful partner. Of the winning pair Grittin was the more spectacular. His smashes and cross court placement drives from close to the net scored many points. Johnston played a steady f,ame. The pair repeatedly maneuered the losers out of position by their change in point of attack and pace.
