The crying need of the country in governmental affairs is more attention to politics, according to Will H. j Hays. republican state chairman. who addressed the county captains of the young republican movement at their conference here today. The conference was declared to have been highly successful by leaders. Hvery county in the state was represented by one or more persons. In his talk. Mr. Hays pleaded for i "the good citizens of this country to ' perform, a citizen's full duty in time of peace as they would a patriotic's duty in time of war." He urged them to take an interest in practical pontics. Referring to preparedness-. DR. J. B. MURPHY DIES SUDDENLY Famous Chicago Surgeon Passes Away at Michigan Lake Resort. MACKINAC ISLAND. Mich.. Aug. L. Dr. John B. Murphy of Chicago. one of the world's most renowned surgeon, died Friday suddenly at a hotel here while on an summer outing. An attack of heart disease was the immediate cause of death. Dr. Murphy had been in poor health for several months, and some had ascribed his condition to the poisoned soup partaken of at the banquet given to Archbishop Mundelein at the University club of Chicago, last winter. His wife was w-ith him at the time of death. The famous surgeon, who recently was knighted by Pcpe Renedict for his researches in surgery, was only öS years old. His pioneer surgery in cases of appendicitis, later in the treatment of other intestinal disorders and more recently in the serum neutralization of rheumatic and other joint troubles has made him known all over the world. President of the American Medical association in elected the same year to be president of the Clirical CongTess of Surgeons of America, John Benjamin Murphy had received the most distinguished honora that could be accorded a surgeon in this country. His operating clinic at the Mercy hospital in Chicago was a mecca for surgeons all over the world. He was born in Appleton. Wis., Dec. 21, 1837. Half column might be tilled with the titles and honors he gained. Dr. Murphy reached prominence in every branch of surgery, but he may be called the founder of the present system of intestinal surgery. It was the "Murphy button." a metal capsule for uniting severed intestines, that in the early nineties brought its inventor into prominence. In in "Chicago. Dr. Murphy showed Dr. Franklin H. Martin, an intimate friend, a netal ball about the s!ze of an Enelish walnut. "There." said Dr. Murphy, "is the thing that is going to revolutionize intestinal surgery.
