NEW CARLISLE, INI).

Deiavan A. Smith. 66 years old, died today at his home. 208 N. Second st., after an illness of nearly two years' duration from an affection of the throat. He has never been confined to his bed on account of his illness and hi3 death was sudden. The deceased was born In Jamestown, N. Y., in 18 50. He came to Niles from South Rend in 1 71 and for a number of years conducted a hotel known as Hotel 52. He returned to South Rend, but about nine years ago he returned to Niles. He was engaged In the hotel business in South Rend also. He is survived by a widow. The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon and will be under Masonic

auspices. The body will be taken

Delbert Oswald fell from a bicycle and broke his left arm. Mr. and Mrs. Roose were Walkerton visitors1 over Sunday. Josephine Fintier of Elkbart is spending a few weeks with Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Scott. Ralph Mitchell is spending the week with his grandmother at Syracuse. The track which had een laid to haul gravel north of tu:n is being moved to Wakarusa. Tne remainder of the gravel on this road will be hauled out from Wakarusa. Rev. I'arks. pastor of the Presbyterian church has been confined to his home on account of illness. Dr. J. C. Iricket of Winona college occupied his pulpit last Sunday. Some fresh air children will be brought from Chicago this week. They will spend two weeks with Nappanee families. The lire department was called out Tuesday morning to put out a fire in the rear end of William Grassblacksmith shop. The damage was small.
