BORDER CHARGES ARE REFUTED IN BLISS REPOR

Assistant Chief of Staff Wires Conditions in Camps Inspected Are Satisfactory.

WASHINGTON. July 20. The war department issued Wednesday a series of reports on the mobilization of the national puard for border duty, all designed to refute charges that the men have been Im. properly rationed and not siwn the l est facilities available in their trip south. Secretary Baker is preparing a report to congress on the subject in response to a resolution adopted a few days ago. To show the present conditions in border camps, MaJ. Gen. Tasker H. Miss, assistant chief of staff, now in irspecting the entire border force. His Hrst report came by telegrapn Wednesday from Mission, Texas, and is as follows: nntls Sanitation Good. "Finished Inspection Monday of Illinois and Wisconsin troops at Fort Sam Houston. Texas. Will mail report today. Finished inspection of Virginia and Illinois troops at Brownsville yesterday. Will finish inspection of New York, Indiana, Minnesota and Texas troops between Mission and San Benito by night of L'Gth. Will mail report soon afterwards. "Have found camps in excellent sanitary condition. Well I Yd ami Sheltered. "Men are reasonably well sheltered and well fed. Have interviewed all regimental and company commanders, and taken down their statements by the stenographer. Thus far they are unanimous in expressing satisfaction and contentment of oflicers and enlisted men. Deficiencies in equipment are being made up as rapidly as possible. Gen. Funston and his staff deserve great credit for efficient handling of difficult problem."

Bunch Defense Dealt Another Blow at Trial

Bridges from the war department Wednesday said the department had tefused to approve the plans for renumbering the regiments of infantry and field artillery of the Indiana national guard now at Mercedes, Texas. The plans suggested when the guardsmen were in camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison, were that the regiments be numbered 162 to 164. Under the ruling of the department the regiments will cont'nue to be mown as the Hrst. second and third, and the batteries as A. B and C. MUNCIE. Ind.. July 20 The defense in the trial of Mayor Rollin H. Bunch, accused of censpiring with other officials to solicit and accept bribes, was dealt another blow Wednesday when Judge IJhdr refused to admit evidence concerning raids made on blind timers and gambling houses by the police. It had been the intention of the defense to introduce evidence to show that Mayor Bunch had not prevented the raiding of such places. When witnesses were asked concerning raids made by the police. Judge Blair refused to permit them to answer. He said that such evidence had no connection with the charges against the mayor. Chief of Polio W. A. McIlvaine did testify that the mayor never told him not to raid blind tigers and resorts. The defense introduced a number of witnesses to testify' as to the good reputation of Mayor Bunch for honesty and integrity. Most of these witnesses were member of the city council and other persons closely connected with the administration. They also Introduced witnesses to show that the reputation of Robert Crabbs, chief witness for the state, for truthfulness was bad. The defense recalled to the stand Crabbs and Thomas V. Miller and attempted to impeach them. Judge Blair sustained objections to most of the questions asked the witnesses. It is expected that Mayor Bunch will take the stand either Thursday or Frlday.
