The remarkable evidence submitted by the German Foreign OtiLv to prove that a German submarine did not torpedo the unarmed Channel passenger steamer "Sussex" is regarded by many American editors as a virtual admission of guilt. While apparently satisfactory and convincing to the German and German-American press, other editors seem to think that Germany's latest defense is deliberately planned to lead to a further exchange of notes and a further postponement of the issue. In THE LITERARY DIGEST for April 22d, the leading feature-article shows in text and picture all sides of American editorial opinion upon this latest complication with the German Government which is conceded to be the most serious since the war began. Other features of great interest are: VERDUN The Bloodiest Battle-Field in History A Eig, Clear Picture Across Two Pages, Showing the Forest, Wood, Hills and Streams including Dead Man'i Hill, Hill 304, Pepper Hill, Fort Vaux, Douaumont, Haucourt Avocourt, and Every Famous Point Mentioned in the Daily Press Dispatches. This Picture is Reproduced from L'lllustration, Paris, and is Unquestionably Accurate.
