WOMAN SEEKS KIDNAPED CHILD IN SOUTH BEND
According to dispatches from Chicago. Mrs. Itla (I n, :'.:: Sheridan road, came to Ii Bend Monday to start a li i it?:uii the possession of her child, Charles. -0 months old. It is stated that the child was kidnaped by his father, Charles Gordon, sr., and biom;ht to South Rend. As far as can be b urned there is :.rt Charles Gordon, living
in thi3 city, and Mrs. Gordon could i ,
not be located here Monday. It Is stated in the Chicago dispatch that Mr. Gordon went to the homo of his
wife Sundav and asked to take the
in? solutions foi various problems tacin- social welfare workers, particularly the problem of dealing w.'tli the fe.-Me minded. Mr. Brown is a member of tho .state board of children's tfii.irdio nö, and also of the irovernor's comiris:ion ior the sfcudy of fee-b'e mlndedness. His talk, an unevj.ected feature of the morning's program, folbvet a report fciven b W. F.. Miller on certain cases of dependency :.nd delinjuency, tho handling of whicii has puzzled the local board. Tlie imestitn of what to do -with the apparently normal children of subnormal or feeble minded parents wh"tl or to place them in good families or to keep them in the orphans" home, eventually to turn them out into the world anyway is constantly presenting itself. Another problem is what to do with a feeble minded child after he has passed the i ve when lie can legally remain the charye of an orphans' home. 'The problem of mental defective:," v;Jd Mr. Brown, "is greater than any of us realize. Al' of our other j.iobloms, I boUexe. arc largely problems cf mental defectives, our relief werk, our delinquency and our truancy problems. Jr September there were 1,7 51 dependent children in our orphans' homes. Of the feeble iiiindo Incss of of these children there was no question. Of the remaining number t.J er cent were backward from four to seven years. In the public schools of the various Mates from J ." t "ä percent are retarded. TELLS CHURCH RELATION TO SOCIAL WELFARE
Dr. Cecil C. North of DePauw university, who is attending the St. Joseph County Social Welfare conference here, spoke on "The Relation of the Church to Social Welfare" at
the Ministerial association meeting at the Y. M. C. A. Monday morning. ;
He said that the church should become actively identified with the work that is being done by charitable organizations. Actual contact with the pe-opl who are benefited by the charitable workers would help th church as well as the people, he said. Church workers should minister t the temporal needs of these persons and at the same time bring them into closer relationship with the church. Rev. John S. Burns, Rev. L. M. Edwards of Mishawaka, and Rev. A. E. Thomas were appointed on a committee' to arrange for a picnic for the ministers and their families. They will report at next Monday's meeting.
Mrs. Lola Truedelle. äl S Rush st.. has been appointed policewoman by the board of safety, having assumed duties Sunday afternoon. This is South Rend's second policewoman, Mrs. Minnie Evans having acted in capacity since May, 1914. Mrs. Truedelle will act with Mrs. Kraus in carrying out the orders of Chief Kerr and will do work similar te that which has been carried on by Mrs. Evan.-. "Have you made any arrests yet?" Mrs. Truedelle was asked. "No. I haven't." was the reply, '"but I almost made one last nicht. If I had had my badge I would have done so." And the new policewoman appears to be c.i pi hie of making arrests when neccssiry. She will work from 1 p. m. to 5: '50 p. m. and frenn 7 p. m. until 11 ;i. m. daily. This was the schedule outlined by Chief Kerr Monday in making the announcement of I'.rf. Truedelle's appointment although he stated that it may be chaneed later.

U. S. TO INSIST ON PROOF OF VILLA'S DEATH
(CONT1NFFD FROM PAGE NE. )
If Villa is not dead and thoie is no real evidence yet that he is, in my opinion the American government could very properly propose that the American expedition must continue until the bandit is rut' down. If Carranza really desires to cooperate with the American forces, he can demonstrate it by more tangible aid than h has yet extended. The American forces should remain in Mexico until either the American troops or the Carranza forceS have capture! Villa." Iti the face of contlkting reports about Villa's death, the war department was especially anxious to hear an ollicial version of a story from San Antonio. Texas. that MaJ.
