AImim. loft to rUlit: Tol Morolitli mid 1 i 1 1 llinuhain. lielow, Alma Ilichard. Tlie crunch of the cinder under the spiked shoe proclaims the opening of the outdoor season at tho various colleges throughout tho (ountry. The hic:trest track event of the season will lie the annual relay (arnial at the University of Pennsylvania in April, when more than L'i o collegians will endeavor to brin" honors to their alma maters. TVd .Mrredith th( middle distancer of the University of Penn vylvania. is prted to garner a number (f points for the Quakers, while Pill PiriKham. the Harvard runner and member of the relay team, is expected to gather in points and honors for the crimson. Alma Kiohards, the Cornell hisrhiumper. has been practicing for the shotput. broad jump and pole vault
in addition to his regular specialty.!
Conch .Tese Ih'.rper chmtred the scene of Notre 1; me baseball activities from the Prcwnson d.amond to .'artier held yesterday afternoon, and. although he dispensed w;h a pra tire srame. he Ke the athletes a hard workout. The held for practice has nowbeen changed three times within a week. In the first few days of outdoor practice he team worked out on the Carroll hall cami us. but a change was made to Prownson field during the fore part of the week. Although the Cartier held diamond is not in the be.t of shape as yet. it is in better condition than either of the other field?. Yesterday's workout consisted of batting practice, infield drill and fuiiKo hitting to the outfielders. Harper used both Wolf ;tnd Corcoran at shortstop In the infield workout. Wolf, however, is suffering from a sore arm and he did practically no throwing. Thursday's practice se.cions were most beneficial to the candidates. Harper had the men at battling and fielding drill in the morninsr. and sent them through a 12-inninir combat in the afternoon. Olit Opons Son .-on. The season opens a week from today. ' Ii vet college of Michigan furnishinc: the attraction on 'nrtier field. The spiad is scheduled for some hard workouts next week and it would not be surprising if Conch Harper would stn$?e a practice contest on the varsity diamond this after n oon. It is also likely that Conch Rockne will take his track men over to Cartier field today. Thus far the outdoor work has Keen done en the dirt track on the St. Hdward's campus. The track men will not he allowed to work out on the cinder track as yet. The track has not b-en put in condition, and Onoh Roene does not wish his men to work out on hard ground until they arc in better condition. Consequently, the work for the next few days will be on the football field, where the ground is soft. Constant improvement is noticeable in the work of the football men who are under spring training. Assistant Coach Rorkne is giving them considerable signal practice and last night he handed out a few more plays. The candidates are rounding into good shape and should be going at top speed before the spring work is brought to a close.
