FORD'S PARTY IS
R TRIP
Boat Leaves New York This Afternoon Pacifist Makes His Will. NEW YORK, Dec. 4. Henry Kord's peace arf?osy sets forth from Hoboken for Europe Saturday at 2 p. m. on tne usnar ii. ine pa-rij numbers 140 souls. They all believe that peace is the most desirable thing in the world. Some believe in dis armament, like Ford does. Some do not. Kut they agree that it is going to be a delightful trip, barring heavy storms, sea sickness, torpedoes and unfriendly cruisers. They are going despite mysterious threats. There was some talk oi postponing the pilgrimage for a week, but Mr. Ford declared Friday night that despite all that has hap pened and all that is likely to happen, the ship will fare forth Satur day. Makes 111 Will. The Detroit pacifist has made his will, obtained his passport and re ceived the blessing of William Jen nings Bryan. Mr. Bryan is not going. Within a couple of weeks, however, he will sail for The Hague, there to join the peace counsellors. Ik fiays that he can be of greater use to humanity if he stays here and tights the sort of preparedness that would ke-r an alien army out of America. Mr. Bryan and Mr. Ford conferred for more than an hour Friday. What they agreed upon was not made public. But from all that could be learned Mr. Ford promised Mr. Bryan liberal financial support in the latter's efforts to prevent the United States creating such nasty things as battleships, forts, arms and ammunition. I toady To SjicihI Millions. Both Mr. Bryan and Mr. Ford Issued statements Friday night. The former wished the latter godspeed. Mr. Ford said that thus far the affair had cost him between $50,000 and $60,000, but that he would spend five or six millions if success required it. The seventh floor of the Hotel Biltmore was a mad house Friday. Humanity in a hundred forms and stages came begging to be taken along. There were rumors of postponements, of internal dissensions, of dire threats of bombs and lawsuits. Worse, for three hours Mr. Ford's score of secretaries lost trace f him and took seriously the rumors that the crustier had been kidnaped by the enemies of peace. During the afternoon furore, one of Mr. Ford's most cherished guests a prominent juvenile court Judge from Denver declared that threats bad almost caused the postponement of the trip. The judge declared that of such portent were the threats that he. Mr. Ford and others met on Thursday afternoon to consider postponing the voyage for a week or so. I'ntriu, Snaps Ford. "Not a Nvord of truth to that," snapped Mr. Ford Friday night. "Whoever said so well, you know what I think of him. It isn't so. You know what Teddy would say. Well, that's what I say." Mr. Ford declared that he didn't give a whoop whether France or England barred him or not. "Every belligerent country- can bar me for all I care. I don't need them." he said. "They need what I am trying to do for them." Bryan is Calm. Mr. Bryan was the sole figure of calm in the turmoil of the day. 1 1 5 remained in his room on the ninth floor of the Biltmore, saying little and smiling widely. He received a few elderly ladies, who gushed forth their hope that he would fight every word of Pres't Wilson'.s plan for preparedness. , He will go to the Hoboken docks Saturday to wave a farewell to tha Ford party as the Oskar churns down toward the sea. He refused to say anything about Capts. Boy-Ed and von Papen. But his face became oddly pink and his lips tightly compressed when he was told that theii recall had been demanded. He had nothing to say about politics at all. This is his statement: "I came to New York, as I stated in my telegram, to xplain to Mr. Ford more fully than I could by wire my reasons for believing' just now that 1 could render larger service here opposing th attempt to increase the appropriations for the army and navy than I could by going with him on a peace ship. Hopes To Join at Hague. "I have seen Mr. Ford and laid my reasons before him. and he recognizes the weight of these rea.ons. I desire to add that I am in hearty sympathy with this effort which he is making and hope to join the party l;.t Tho Tlntnia Ac tha itolo nf H-io?-arrival at The Hague is not yet known. I cannot fix the date for my departure. "Mr. Ford is making an earnest and unselfish eftVrt in behalf of peace and he ought to have the good wishes and sympathetic support of all who desire peace, even though some may not fully share his faith in the immediate success of the trip, of course those Nvho want the war to continue ridicule the effort, especially those who speak for the big munitions factories which are exporting war material at a big profit. i This is to be expected. This ridicule is the favorite weapon of those who desire to oppose any movement when thev find themselves unable to sudJ port their opposition with argument, ilf any of the people of the ark had been making mney out of the flood they would probably nave ridiculed Xuali for sending out the dove." .",oo pieces hand painted chiiu appropriate for Xmas gifts, by Clara Schäfer at Gas .rffice. y BEAT FRY TO IT Decatur Man Being Talked as Democratic State Chairman for 1916. Special to News-Times. INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 4. Quick shifts in democratic state politics seem to be all the rage here Just now. Here's another one. Instead cf James II. Fry for state chairman uf the party in 1916, they now are saying here that Lew G. Kllingham of Decntur, formerly secretary oi state, and close friends and political manager of John A. M. Adair, announced candidate for governor, will be the man selected. This is In line with a statement from Mr. Fry recently to the effect that he would not consent to be state chairman unless the candidates agreed on him in other words, ho would not enter a tight for the place. To Manage Adair. The reason they're talking Ellingham, apparently, is because it has been announced that Ellingham is to manage the campaign of Adair. Furthermore, Mr. Adair, if he outstrips the field of candidates, will be permitted to name the state chairman he desires, and that it will be Ellinghim is being prophesied here without hesitation. William II. Vollmer of Vincennes, who would have been the state chairman had the O'Hrien candidacy found favor in the eyes of himself and the rest of the democrats of the state, was here and said he was not a candidate for the chairmanship. Dailcy Still Quiet. The attitude of Frank C. Dailey, United states district attorney, toward the Adair candidacy, has not yet been made public and democrats here are watching for it closely, for it maj- mean things. Yet the majority believe, or seem to believe, that Mr. Dailey's candidacy now will not stop the Adair situation. Another democratic situation, with Indiana in the limelight, has just become known here. Joseph H. "he.i. a judge of the appellate court, from Seymour, Ind., is a candidate to .'ill a vacancy that will be created in the United States diplomatic service when the minister to Chili is transferred to Mexico, as Is the present plan of the federal government, so it is said. iikn irru All members of the Spectacular Degree team will meet for rehearsal anj dr. 11 Sunday afternoon. D'.o. :,. at 2 o'clock sharp. Pro. Steel, supreme organizer, will b here as instructor. AjCK.
