WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. Existing duties on sugar will be retained and tho war emergency revenue act will be extended until peace is declared in Europe, if the recommendations of the administration to congress next December are heeded. Sec'y McAdoo made the following official statement: "In reply to many inquiries I have received about the revenue measuro that will be proposed in the next con
gress, I have determined to recom
mend (1) that the emergency revenue act which expires by limitation on Dec. ol, 1915, be extended until peace is restored in Europe, and (2 that
the existing duties on sugar shall be
retained for several years, or until normal customs conditions are restored. These are distinctly revenue m ear j res and are necessary in view of the extraordinary conditions now prevailing throughout the world. "It is impossible to state at the moment what, if any. additional revenue measures may be necessary, as the estimates of the various departments have not yet been received. It is clear, however, that the two sources of i . venue I have Just mentioned should be preserved, no matter what the departmental estimates may be. Of course, it rests with the congress to say what shall be done. I am merely stating what my recommendations in these particulars may be." In this way it is estimated that approximately $150,000,000 revenue will be insured to the government for at least one and perhaps for several years, the war emergency measuro being counted upon to supply about 5 SO, 000, 000 and the duty on sugar between $30,000,000 and $60,000,000 annually.
