CHICAGO, Oct. 2. The lid was pried off the western conference football season today in nil the Big Nine colleges except the university of Chicago. In each of today's games the conference teams go against elevens that will give those watching the race for the western championship, a good ilne on the offensive and defensive pliy of the various aspirants for conference honors. The university of Illinois eleven, champions last year, were pitted against the Haskell Indians, a strong team that Coach Zuppke figured would tak. the very best material and strategy he has to defeat. The Indians ma(l great preparation for this game in the hope of showing the champions that the conference colleges are not the only ones in Illinois that knew the art of football. Minnesota, runner-up in last year's conference race, and picked by many critics as having a good chance to fin'ish at the top this season, was matched against North Dakota at Minneapolis today. The Gophers went on the field this afternoon with a team that contained seven stars of last year's squad. At Evanston Northwestern went into action against Lake Forest. The game promised to be an interesting argument, as the Itke Forest eleven is known as a scrappy bunch of pigskin rushers. Purdue and Wabash clashed today at Lafayette. Both teams have been highly spoken of by critics and a rattling good game was in prospect as the two squads pranced upon the field, coach Andy Smith haa been having some difficulty in tilling the bertha made vacant by graduations, but he has had a promising bunch of recruits to pick from. The Wabash squad has been displaying unusual speed along with ts usual aggressiveness during practice this season. Indiana and DePauw lined up aginst each other at Bloomington this afternoon. The Hoosiers went into this opening game, determined to make up for the miserable showing bade last year. Ohio State started today against Ohio Wesleyan at Columbus. Iowa clashed with Cornell college at Iowa City. Wisconsin -.vent against Lawrence with good chance of winning by a big margin.

RED S0X-PHILLY SERIES TO BE ARRANGED TODAY NEW YORK, Oct. 2. All the details of the coming series between the Boston Americans and the Philadelphia Nationals will be arranged at a meeting of the national commission to be held here Saturday. On tue toss of a coin will depend the choice of the city in wheh the opening game will be played, but there appears to be more interest in the late of the opening content than in the location of the initial battle for th chain i nship of Hi 15. Whether the series will begin on Friday. Oct. S, or on Saturday, Oct. ?, is causing much discussion among followers of baseball in this city. Many express the belief that the American league interests will endtaor to have the play he;in on Friday. Oct. S, thrt day after the close of the league sea:on. This would preclude the possibility of t lie Phillies sending their star pitcher. Grover Cleveland Alexander, to the mound in three of the lirst four games played, as might easily be don should the series start cm Saturday, t. .. Under the latter v.-ht dule Alexander could be worked Saturday. Monday and Wednesday, which, in the " pinion of many cb followers of baseball, would be decidedly advantageous to the National league stand.tid bearers. other matters to tome up for consideration include the price and handling of tickets, the assigning of umpires and numerous minor details n quiring considerable discussion and i he meeting may develop into a protruded session.

Prospects for a victory in th? opening game today against Wi.karusa are very gloomy. It Is doubtful if Coach Metzler can line up a team capable of holding the strong downstateTs. A badly crippled team will start because of the ineligibility decree of E. I. Kizer, assistant principal of the high school, who banLshed those students who did not make three credits in their work the last school semester, and those who at present are not up in their studies. Of those who received the "axe," possibly the greatest loss is that of Fullback Flndlay, who was counted on to back up the line where lie is a demon at tackling. Others who are put out are Galloway, who has been used at end t!r": season and who probably would secservice in today's game, and DuComb, a big and speedy guard who Metzler hoped to develop into a lirst class lineman. Those who are at present unable to play, but may play later in the season if they make up back work, are Strang, halfback on the second team, and "Ray" Smith, end of tho i'irst team, who has been showing great form in practice for a man ".green" at the game, he having played only this season. Sixteen men will be taken on the trip today. According to Metzler's announcement last night tho local team will line up as follows: Center, Parks; Ig, Wutrich; rg, L. Kreighbaum; It. Burner; rt, Kreighbaum; le, Maklclski; re, Rokop. The backneld will start with Mohn at quarter, Kelly and Sousley at the halves, and Hicks a. fullback. The following men will be taken along as reserves and are sure to get Into the game: Eibeletski at center or tackle, Olson and O'Donnell halves, Butler and W. Kreighbaum linemen. A number of rooters will accompany the team, and the trip will be taken in automobiles, the party leaving tho Y. M. C. A. building at 12:30 o'clock this afternoon.
