BOYIC, REPORTED SUNK IS IN PORT
Great Activity of German Submerges Starts Many Wild Rumors in London. LONDON, Aug. 21. The sinking of the White Star liner Arabic Thursday followed hy Friday's great activity of German submarines caused numerous wild reports to be circulated in London during the dav. The While Star liner Bok loaded to capacity with war supplies, bound from New York for Liverpool, was reported sunk in the submarine zone, but Friday night arrived safely at Liverpool. The British steamship Dunsley, de-t-cribed in reports of the Arabic disaster as heing struck by a torpedo, is now reported sunk. Two of the crew were killed and the remaining 35 were landed at Liverpool. Reports state that the Dunsley remained above water about three hours. Capt. Finch and other otiicers of the Arabic asserted Friday that the submarine gave no warning before launching the torpedo against the White Star liner. They declare the torpedo was lired as they were going to the rescue of the steamer Dunsley. They state that S. O. S. calls had already been sent out hy the Arabic's operator calling assistance to the Dunsley. The London press comments insistently upon the American administration's attitude toward German submarine warfare as expressed in Pres't Wilson's note and asks- pointedly what America is going to do about It now that it is established that the liner was torpedoed without warning with American passengers on hoard and that American passengers lost their liven as a result of the submarine's act. Aside from the vast value of American securities which went down with the Arabic estimated variously at between $10.0000,000 and $15,000,000, it is now established that between $2,000,000 and $3.UOO,O0o in gold was sunk with the ship. Tiie Arabic consignment of mail included 2.S13 bags, mostly for the United States manv of them coming from Sweden, Norway, Holland, Switzerland and Spain. CONSIDERABLE AItIIORSHIP. On the Defensive Now and then, one working among business men, particularly if his object is to sell anything, encounters a man who at the instant of approach throws up a barrier. In some cases it amounts to a virtual defiance. He is very obviously on the defensive. Salesmanship has developed so rapidly into a science and the successful salesman has so quickly changed from a jovial jokstcr into a cool calculating expert who measures all things with respect to the effect to be attained, that those buyers who have not yet become adjusted to the new situation are likely to distrust a solicitor as one seeking only to gouge as deeply as possible into the cash register. Insofar as the buyer's attitude is intended to make the solicitor prove the merit of his proposition, it may be justified on the ground of good business. But when he assumes that the motive of the salesman is to get the largest possible order without regard to the likelihood of the merchant's disposing of the goods, he usually is mistaken. A wise salesman never attempts to oversell a customer. Particularly is this true with the man who sells advertising. 'His is a work in which cooperation and service are essential to mutual advantage. Results make advertising a success. Results will build up an account. Properly valuing a small or ordinary accouut which grows with its own success, above a mere "flash in the pan," the advertising solicitor bases his solicitation on the results he is confident of obtaining. When The News-Times solicits advertising it does so with as much regard for the service which it is certain can be rendered, for the conditions and possibilities of the business solicited, as for the amount of space which can be sold. Advertising in The News-Times means SERVICE WITH SPACE. South Bend News-Times Advertising Department
