James R. Garfield Declares Genuine Progressive Cannot Return to Old Party.
IF GUILTY, READY TO HANG, SAYS CAPTAIN
Tly fiil-son ianItH-r. MENTOR, O., July 27. "The republicans In Ohio have mano it impossible for the proirr .-e-ives to come back." James Tl. fiarfield so concluded a long and caref il review of the j 1 i t -'leal situation in Ohio. "And tho Kime appears to he true aa to tho presidency." be added. "Tho fo. called national leaders of the republican party tho rnn who took tho nomination for Taft at. Chleaco four year hK" are evidontlv det rmind to follow a political course as unenlightened as the one they eho.-o cn that occasion. They are still bhndly reactionary. They uro planning the nomination of candidates whom no prosrresv:i o could by any imans support men liko Hoot, Weeks or our Mr. Burton of Ohio and they .are planning platforms which arc as reactionary as their candidates. "I am therefore hopir.jr and expecting to ?eo tho nomination l.v the prorre?slve.s of some "od strong man for rovcrnor hero in Ohio and of a man like Roosevdt rr (lov. Johnson of California for president. No Suport for Obi (iiianl. "It is futllo to talk f Koin back to a party whoso prove rniiu' spirits are "Will him Parnes of New York. I role Penrose of Pennsylvania, and Wlnthrop Murray Crane of Massachusetts. These men aro without evfn sucestlonii of progressive loanlr.crs and there is not even a bint of the possibility that tho old puard mlht be willing to compromise on fornc candidate le-s reactionary than those named. it would teem that tho four million votes cast In tho last presidential eleetion by tbo progressive party has made no impression on tho republican man-.'iKf-rs. The same protest against reaction made in that election will have to bo repeated." The progressive party 1 this state incompletely organized and I 1 nd that the opinion expressed Py Garfield is held generally by the party's leaders. In Fpite of tho fart that progressives cast only prvfn per cent of th" vote last November it is b lieved that tho party holds the balance of power between the republicans and democrats and in r.i of bad candidates on both the republican and democratic tick
ets. miKht easily win against both. WilIU I DiipHintm lit. Regular republicanism in Ohio has lost in popularity since the election of forrr.fr Congressman Willis as governor. Willis, has proven a sad disappointment. Hi name, it will be noted, no longer figures' as Ohio'.s "favorite son" candidate for the presidency. He has done u hat tho liquor interests wanted done, namely, by decentralizing saloon control he has mr.de possible tho return of local option and a wide open policy. He has ravaged the public service to get joKs for deserving republicans; he lias played in with a reactionary legislature and done all in his power to nullify tire good laws passul by previous admini.-trat ions. And ho has not ushered in the era of prosperity he promised on every f-trect corner during1 his campaign. It is no wonder the progressives can't see their way to fall into lino with a republican mirnv like that. Iturton, meanwhile. Is enjoying a lovely prospect as presidential candidate. "P'ic" Herrick has been laughed out of the rare and the republican f tandpats agreed to stand pat behind Jiurton and bis 114 votes for tho Aldrich tariff lull. Word comes from New York that Ihirton is looked with favor by Winthrop Crane. Wiiliam Ilarnes. ct al., and case the "greatbiined" Hoot is pronounced too old or is, for any other reison discarded, Jlurton is favorite for second choice. In .a presidential race between Wood row Wilson. Theodore I', liurton and Hiram Johnson, who would win'.'

It was ery soon after this privilege was granted that iieid's son-in-law, J. M. Krieson. was made chief engineer of the Kastland. I.LHSRORO, Maine. July 27. A murderous attack was committed on Mrs. George W. Childs Hrexel of Philadelphia near her summer home at North Islesboro Sarurday afternoon. Her moans brought men who lifted her to safety. Her assailant, evidently a foreigner, was about if' years of age and wore a slouch hat. He escaped to the mainland. Mr. Drexel had been waiting at her cottage to join a yachting party. She strolled along the road watching for the boat to take her to the yacht. .he noticed a man was following her and started te retrace her steps. The man picked hT up and hurled her over the precipice. A general alarm has been smt out for him. It is tlmiKht he was a former employe of tlie Drexel family.

He now must w'oigh W. irourke Cockran's impassioned plea for the condemned man and the cold uncompromising exposition of the printed statute by Asst. Dist. Atty. Kobf rt c. Taylor. Cof bran made a fervent appeal for Keeker. He admitted that tho now famous Rosenthal conference between "Fig Tim" Sulli- an and Keeker might not be considered under the strict let

"are you going to electrocute a man on techicalitics? If he is executed now he will be executed on a technicality." Taylor put forth an unemotional demand that tho law be served to its uttermost ends. Ho characterized Cockran's plea as nothing more than an attempt to discredit the witnesses, who, by their testimony, sent Keeker to the condemned cell. He harkened back to the two verdicts of two juries and To the decision of the court of appeals, and as calmly asked that nothing except relevant facts be consider fd and that Keeker would bo given to the executioner.
