The husiness men of the southern Michigan city are strongly lined up hehind their lnisehall team and are doing evervthing possible to encour- - e the national pastime. The prolirittitr.s or tne stores mat wouiq omerwiso he open have decided to close '.for a few hours Sunday afternoon so as not to give anyone an excuse for .staving iiwiiy from the game. When the Niles team plays the thud Karne of the series with South; la nd at Springbrook park o.o week tr oin next Sunday, it will send a band I 3 along with its players, in this way Nibs expects to increase the enthusiasm of its fast aggregation spurring t h m on to victory. Mgr. Moon of the South Pend All Stars announced today that special tars would take South Bend fans to Nibs next Sunday. The cars will go over the Chicago. South Bend and Northern Indiana line, leaving the street car station at 2 o'clock. This will get the South Bend fans to Niles just a short time Wfore the frame stalls. The special cars will return to South Pend soon after the game. The South Pend aggregation has hi en strengthened by the addition of a couple of fast men who have t lie reputation of being able to "burn tlnncs im" ou flw diamond "Goat" Anderson's ball tossers are a speedy hunch, but with the lineup Mgr. Good Klf was the ormer 01 wennt. dav and mixed with it were a few exeitinc finishes and one hit; surprise. The latter came in the form of the defeat of V. C. Mownes. jr.. former national champion, at the hands of L T. Hink'ham, a local player, hy a score of ; are! Cownes was two down at ttio nonn interval .nut u was me oo.ion of nearly all his followers that ho would owjooirie hi opponents lead and win out. Mownes game was ragged throughout the day. while that of Mingham was not brilliant, mit steady. Sawcr Downs Hunter. The match that drew the' large gallerv was that between Sawyer and Paul Hunter, the medalist. Hunter ....1 . 't4Yl ! was conceded an eiuai ch.uk-v oo the former western champion, but was unable to cope with par golf. Savvver had a 7 4 in the morning, with all putts holed. In the second round his card showed even fours to where the mat h closed, which was at the thirteenth ureen with the result reading and in favor of Sawjer. only one symie figured in the match and that came toward the end. Hunter was hunkered otf the twelfth and played a beautiful shot to within six feet of the cup. This laid Sawyer a dead stymie and prevented a possible two. Chick Kvans disposed of Kenneth Kd wards in easkv fashion by a score of 7 and fi. The match was interesting for the tirst 1 holes and the pair started the second half with Kvans but two up. Chick had a great advantage in driving, his ball traveling forty yards further than Edwards on nearly every hole. Kxpt'-ct StandMi in I'lnaD. James Standish, jr.. of Detroit, runner up last year in this tournament, went his way to the last eight, by defeating W. 1 1. Cardner of Buffalo by 1 down on the 3fi holes. The match was always in doubt. They were even and four to go in the morning and Standish. playintr one under par. finished the first half four to the good. Then Gardner turned the tables and overtook his opponent, doing to the lath hole, Gardner was 1 up and then again the Detrcit man rivercame his disadvantage aad finally won the last hole. It look very probable that Standish will be a finalist again this year. He is in much the easier half of the draw, now that Kownes is out, and his boldest man seems to be Pankard. Pankard won his match on the .17th hole from Howard Le of Detroit, twice winner of the Michigan state championship. Doth played inferior golf through the first ."4 holes of the match. Pankard was 1 tip at the Dth but at the 31th he was 2 down and 2 to play. Mee was nicel.y on the short thirty-fifth with his iron and nt this point it looked like the match was over. Pankard came through with a beautiful iron that stopped five feet from the pin and gave him a four. He followed this up by getting a birdie four on the 4.tr-ynrd last hole and squared the contest. 'n the deciding hole. Bankard again showed to advantage by holing out a 15-foot putt for the win. Dhldel Pushes Neille. Hewitt Pilch won his match from J. K. Pole bv the cloe margin of one j hole on the U6. Pole is a local man who holds the amateur record of the course at 71. J. A. .Miller disposed t of Addison Stillwell of Chicago, 4 and I had a fairly close call with William Middel of Indianapolis, but man-la-ed to come through the day with a win of : ami -. At the fifteenth hole in th morning round 1 was 7 up and had been playing strong. I had left a four, three, four for the course record, which would be 70. cut I got into all kinds ot trouble on the remaining holes and shot a . t and G for a 76. I was only - up and 4 to play at the l.'.th in th afternoon, hut a half on that hole and a win on the Ddh settled the affair. Midriel recently won the championship of the Central Golf association.
