Gardiner gave a talk to members of the society, making an Appeal for 13 volunteers to assist tho Associated Charities. Mrs. Charles A. Pitcher gave a reading on the "Red Man;" Mm. Webster and Mrs. Entzian contributed a duet; Mrs. W. C. Yena had a reading on the Mormons of fia.lt Lake City: a leaflet was read by Mrs. Marvin Ort which completed the program for the day. The social hour with refreshments was enjoyed late in the afternoon. A picnic at Howard park will take place of tho next meeting on Aug. 10. Mrs. S. VT, Baer, 32 4 S. The membership contest between St. Joseph Valley tent. No. 110S, and St. Joseph Valley tent No. 1, both Maccabee lodges, closed last night with two members in the lead for the tent No. 1,' and a banquet was served by the losing tent to the winners at W. O. W. hall. The contest which has been going on since Dec. 1, has been vcr' successful from the start and has been close up until the end. Tent No. J acquired three members during fie last two days, which pnt them ahcal of their opponents instead of one oehind. Grand Camp officers were present and made speeches, among whom was J. W. Reprogle, grand record keeper of the state ordjr from Goshen. Other visitors present were from Inldanapolis. Mishawaka and Elkhart, making a total of niore than r00' Maccabees. A short business session was held by Tent No. 110S before the open meeting, when one candidate was initiated and one application balloted upon. The tent made arrangements for a Sunday Maccabee day to be held next Sunday morning at the First M. E. church. There are expected to bo more than 1,000 present to hear .a sermon by the pastor of the church. Dr. Henry L. Davis. The Maccabees will meet at Beyler hall before tho services and march to the church In a body.

SAX FRANCISCO, July 14. A package addressed to Francis X. Uushman, the movie actor and delivered at the St. Francis hotel Tuesday evening", contained a bomb. When it was opened a burning fuse waft less than an inch from tho explosive. The package w its delivered by a well dressed woman about :?,) p. m. It was received by 1 1. M. Miller, clerk at the St. Francis. Uushman is in Los Angoies. Miller delivered the package to H. Reichcnbach. Irishman's advance agent. In the package in a woman's handwriting was the following- note: "God will join us in heaven. You have failed to answer my letter. (Signed) ". G."
NEW SLIDE AT PANAMA
PANAMA, July 14. A new slide has occurred on the east side of the Panama canal at the Gailard cut and threatens to delay the passage of the warships having on board the Annapolis cadets. Reported -dredging is going on and every possible effort being made to permit the passage of deep draft vessels.
